Help! Y Pipe Removal

Hey guys,

I've started pulling the car apart to do a dump pipe install and I'm stuck at removing the Y pipe bolt from under the car. This is RHD btw.

I don't have nearly as much clearance as the pic above because the stock dump pipe has all these heat shields on it and maybe angled slightly differently.

I can't seem to get any sort of decent leverage with a range of 10mm spanners and ring spanners. Even hitting it with WD40/Inox is hard because of the clearance and angle. I'm afraid if I keep going I'll end up rounding the dam thing!

So thats my dilemma. Has anyone got any ideas I can get it out? Is there any way I can tackle this from the top? Can I do the "unbolt engine mounts and jack up the engine" trick to get more clearance?

I'm so close to putting the car back together and taking it to a mechanic!

im not 100% sure but i took off the y pipe pretty easily from the top, im not sure about the clearance with your car but i just took off the pipe that goes from the y pipe to the i/c take off the top intake, then i could reach the bolts to the y pipe no problem but i also used a socket wrench for it...... got a picture from the top?

Interesting. I think the setup might be slightly different, from the top is an absolute mess.

Not the best pics, but here it is:

+1, remove the CRV and you should be able to get a better point to work from.

I'm not sure if things are different for RHD, but on my LHD RX-7, I was able to install a downpipe without having to touch the Y-pipe.

If you have to take the Y pipe off, I recommend removing the secondary turbo inlet pipe completely (two 10mm bolts on the turbo, 1 10mm bolt up top) and then you can access the y Pipe nuts from the top. Just did this myself last weekend.

I was under the impression I needed to remove the Y pipe to get to the dump pipe.

I will try to do the dump pipe without touching the Y pipe this weekend and see how I go

well i had to just unbolt the y pipe but left the hoses on and move the y pipe slightly to get to the 2 top bolts of my downpipe.

Thanks again to all that helped out here. I ended up removing the dump pipe without removing the Y pipe. On that note, that bolt I was stuck on can be easily removed once the dump pipe is out of the way.

I feel like there should be an exclusive club for those who've removed the stock dump pipe themselves hahaha.

Here's the bastard:

I love how you guys call it the "dump" pipe, as here in the states we say "down" pipe. "dump" is sorta reserved for reference to "taking a dump" or a really shitty apartment where someone died.. lol.
