Help! Speedometer Sensor
Yesterday while driving I looked at my speedometer and it was at zero. A few minutes later I got a check engine light. When I got home I pulled the code and it was #6, speed sensor. The manual says this is in the dash. Has anyone ever experienced this before, and if so, how did you fix it? Thanks for your help.

well of course it is connected to the speedo behind the dash but then that goes to one of the connections where the transmission is (about straight down from where the shifter is). I don't know how you would go about fixing this problem but I do remember that there are 2 connectors right near the transmission that fit into each other and I had those switched that was the reason for no working speedometer for me.
Hopefully the connector is loose or something

Did the speedometer needle jump at all? The speed sensor itself is in the transmission (it detects the spinning of the driveshaft and interprets that to speed or something along those lines haha). Another thing to check for is to make sure that the line from the VSS is secure in the ECU (I had a VSS light come on and it turned out to be a loose wire on the harness). I'm not sure where teh VSS is ont eh transmission but they're not extremely expensive and should be fairly straight forward to install.

Thanks for the input guys. I didn't see the needle jump. It was like one minute it was working the next one it stopped. Then a few minutes later it gave me the check engine light. I'll double check the wire to the ECU this afternoon.

The speedo part in the trans near the rear is like a generator, puts out a signal. The drive gear on that sensor can break. Check that and the connectors. the gear if broken can not be bought from the dealer with out the sensor ($160 ) ,Garfinkle has made them from nylon to save some customers from having to pay that amount .

Hey duboisr,
Thanks for the reply. I am beginning to think that it is the culprit. I have access to another though. Unfortunately the bolt that holds it to the tranny case is siezed on there really good and I am having a difficult time getting it to break loose.

The sensor was the problem. It had zero resistance while a good one had about 250 ohms. Changed the sensor and the tranny fluid now it is working like a champ!
