NJ Help diagnose - rapid backfires, rough idle

I appreciate any advice you experts can offer about this problem...

While driving into work this morning. The car was running fine, no problems, driving about 20 miles. Until I slowed down to merge onto another road. I braked went into 3rd, then started give her gas to merge and it started to backfire really fast (like 6-8 firecrakers went off in a row) Got up to speed , shifted into 4th and then it was driving fine for another mile or so. Until I slowed down to enter the gate at work. The car started to idle rough and backfire a bit as I gave it gas and clutched it to get it into the parking lot.
Any thoughts??????? Also didn't notice any heavy smoke or sweet smells.

94, 5 spd.
About 3-4 yrs on a KDR motor, rebuilt turbos, Pettit ecu, M2 intake, Gotham hf cat, RD dual tip.
Not to many miles on mods. 90K on car.

You said you didnt notice any heavy smoke, were there ANY smoke??

Make sure the hose off the map sensor didnt pop off.

I would also double check to see if the plug boots are secure on your plugs.

Red face

Plugs or a vacuum line. I want to move, how nice it must be to live near a shop. Not only to have "experts" around the corner, but also just to have somewhere reliable to go to for anything. Man I hate living in Bumfuk, NC.

Yeah, it's been awhile. Work hasn't given me good days off to hit events the past few years. So just been hanging aound.

Checked all hoses and plugs, everything seemed snug.
Yes there was a little puff of smoke when I clutched and gassed it to keep it running to get into the lot. Nothing steady.
Coolent level is fine.

Also I did have less then 1/4 tanks of gas. My org. thought was maybe some bad gas getting sucked in.

I started it up about 4 hours later, it didn't sound normal. Though no smoke on out the back, idled btwn 800- 1200, vac around 10. But wasn't to the point where it would stall. So I ended up driving it home 20 miles. The first 2-3 miles, power seemed to be low. Took a bit to get up to speed. But when I got up over 40mph it ran fine. Stopped at a few intersections, idle was good around 800. Stopped for gas it started rite up and idle smooth.
What I did notcie
There seemed to be very little boost 2.5-4 lbs starting out, up to 4K rpms.
Boosted better in 4th and 5th at speed.
Started it up today. No irregular smoke. Let it run for about 15 min, idle was smooth around 800 vacum was 9.

GoodfellaFD3S - think I will. Just need to figure out when.

cpnneeda - but cost of living is alot better in NC.

With your idle sitting that low it doesnt make me believe there is a vacuum leak, sounds like a stuck/chipped seal in all honesty. Is the boost gauge flucuating about 1-2 psi while at idle? Take it to Rich and Ihor for a compression test as I think it is likely time you let them build you a new engine.
