BIG Fuel Leak After Rebuild

I just finished rebuilding my swapped J-Spec S4 TII engine, and after finally getting everything buttoned up, upon cranking I was getting a smell of gas, but no start. I found fuel rapidly dripping from under UIM and down the side of the engine. Upon removal of the UIM, I found a small "lake" of gas had collected under the primary injectors and oil injectors. I rechecked all my hoses and they were all clamped down and secure. I cannot find the source of this huge leak, and this is all that's standing in the way of me firing her up! I don't think this could be leaky injectors due to the size of the leak, but I could be wrong. I've heard about the Pulsation Dampers going bad on these engines so I'm thinking it could be that? But the damper itself didn't seemed soaked Any advice or help would be much appreciated!

Also all the emissions on this engine have been removed.

I will be replacing the pd tomorrow with a banjo bolt and hopefully that will fix it. If that doesn't work then that narrows it down to leaky injectors right?

BIG Fuel Leak After Rebuild

Have you tried jumping the test connector, as detailed here:
https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...nector-650673/

With the fuel system primed, it will be obvious where the leak is coming from.

just to throw another idea out there ...

if you happened to have everything apart at some point, check all the joints where there's a washer. also check the injectors themselves. see if there is any movement in them.

Thanks for the input guys, I will be connecting the fuel pump directly from the battery tomorrow also to check for leaks. And although I never took the rails themselves apart, the injectors are able to rotate slightly in their respective locations, is this movement normal or are they faulty?

rotation is fine. it's up and down movement that you don't want. mine had somehow developed an up and down movement in them after i put my Gen II back together, so when the rails would pressurize, one of the injectors would blow down and out past the seal, and of course leak, just you described yours does.

I don't seem to have the yellow fuel pump check connector, or at least I can't find it. Did it come on the NA harnesses?
Edit: I found it

Found the culprit, cracked injector nozzle. Is there a way I can swap the tip out from an NA injector I have, or do I have to get a whole new injector?

A cracked pintle cap wont cause any of the fuel leak problems you described.

Well the fuel was shooting out of somewhere on the side of that injector, I guess bad o-ring or something. Stupid question but can you use NA injectors on a turbo engine?

i don't think anyone is doubting that the leak is coming from the injector. i certainly am not. however, if it were leaking from the pintle cap, then it should actually leak into the engine.

as far as the N/A injector is concerned, it will physically fit and plug into the harness, but it's about 90cc smaller in flow capacity. so consider that.

also, if you want to test, then swap the injectors front to rear and see if the front still leaks. for what it's worth, i think it was the front one on mine that leaked in the manner i described above.

Is there a way to test the injectors outside the car? And also if I do put the NA injectors in it would only be temporary because I need to get the car going. Thanks for all the help!

while i may be skeptical that the leak is where you think it is, there is nothing wrong with testing. put the N/A injectors in and see if they leak the same way. leave them unplugged and see if it still leaks and pools. if it does, then you'll know the leak is coming from above. in the meantime, go to RockAuto and order a set of injectors seals.

I was going to say since you had the uim off, you could have primed the fuel system

Yes I now know how to do that haha. A new problem has arisen, and big surprise, it's the injectors again. I am getting no trace of fuel on the spark plugs, and no smell of gas, or mist of fuel when I pull the spark plugs and crank the engine, even though the fuel system is circulating. They are either completely clogged since they were sitting for years (i assume) before I got the engine, or I switched a plug since I am adapting my NA harness for the turbo engine and hadn't labeled which injector plug went to which injector beforehand. Is there some way to decipher this or does it even matter? This is extremely frustrating because now I have to go back to college and can no longer work on the car until winter break! I wanted to take the car with me but looks like I'm out of luck this time around.

try this: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...s4-na-1078478/

my main question here though, is are you getting spark without fuel or are you getting neither?

Awesome thanks that was just what I was looking for ^ and yes I have verified that I have spark. I took out the injectors and inspected them today. All but one secondary injector clicked and sprayed when tested. The one secondary injector was totally shot and didnt click or spray at all.
