guy who'd never seen an FD before...

So I am selling my motorcycle and the guy who is buying it was checking it out when he saw my car and asked, "What kind of car is that?" I told him and he was just stunned. This is a ~55 year old guy who, by all appearances, is a typical guy...you know, one who's been around and seen a lot of things. He told me he'd never seen a car like this before. I told him about the history of the 3 model years of the FD and said, "There were only about 5500 imported in those three years total....so, you definitely don't see them often." He seemed genuinely enthralled with the car, it was kind of one of those moments when you DO realize you have something 'special'.
He spent more time talking to me about my car than the bike....lol! He finally asked if I knew of any for sale, I told him no but I could check around. He then asked if I would consider selling mine, and I told him, no...it wasn't for sale. He asked, "At any price?" and I was like, "Well...you know...EVERYTHING has a price. To tell you the truth, I would start considering selling this car at $40K...."
THAT brought some raised eyebrows...

All in all it was a pretty cool experience.

I was under the impression that there were around 15,000 imported and about 8,000 left per DMV records.

Good story and the car is certainly a conversation piece...especially when they are in good shape!

All you need is some clueless rich guy to offer you $40k for your car. Most of us would like that, then again, not sure what I would replace it with...

Shoulda sold it to him.

What you experienced was ONCE IN A LIFETIME. Good job screwing it up lol

Jk but seriously you really should have tried to sell it to him for a crazy price. It would be win win for you.

That is a pretty cool experience when someone just stops to look at your car because they have never seen one before.

I have definitely been told Miata. "What is that? A Miata?"

Me: "Yeah. This is the fastest Miata you'll ever see." With my buddy trying not to laugh too hard. :-D

I don't have a "RX7" badge on mine and get that "what is it?" question on rare occasions. There aren't many around and no one remembers Mazda's toilet bowl emblem.
It's nice when they're surprised after I tell them how old it is too. Styling must have aged well to others and not just in our eyes. And I agree, the exclusivity of the car is kinda cool.

I've had several people ask what it is. One even thought it was a new model Corvette.

haha, a corvette! Thats something to laugh about. Mine only has the nasy rear gold toilet emblem and no other emblems. I got that question alot when I first got it (What kind of car is that?). It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Up until about two weeks ago I owned the only FD in my town. Then some guy bought a blue LS1 FD. Now everyone thinks that guys cars is amazing lol.....gotta love smaller towns. Wait till they see mine when I get it out of the garage after all I've been doing to it.

maybe i misread what he wrote but as far as i can tell, he offered to sell it for $40k and the guy raised his brow, not that he offered to buy it for that much.

closest i have had happen was some guy knocked on my door and offered me $7500 for my S-10 4X4 with lift kit on it that had been sitting in my driveway for about 2 years. i of course sold it to him because i knew i would never get another opportunity to sell the truck for twice its blue book value regardless of the mods i had done to it. he'd have to be foolish to turn down $40k unless he has $60k+ into it.

Usually when you have someone continuously insisting if a car is for sale, you have them by the neck.

When the guy said "at any price" of course isn't literal but if OP did in fact say 40k, an outrageous price, even with the guy negotiating with OP to like 30-35k is a GREAT price to sell at.

just sounds like he was chatting to me, not like he was realistically going to pay even $35k for a car he knows nothing about.

Mine doesn't have any markings on it at all.

People are always speeding up and trying to get a look at it.

I had some neighbors in my shop the other day to show them something else, and I overheard one of the kids asking if it was a corvette. I was thinking about saying, "No. It's much more rare than that." Instead, I just pretended not to hear. I think I'll just let them wonder.

Here in Idaho, I've only ever seen another RX-7 in person once or twice in my life, I don't think 90% of the people here could identify my car if they tried.

Exactly. He was simply trying to find out more about the cars since he'd never seen one. He said he knew about "that one that looked like a Porsche" (assuming he meant 2nd gen), I told him I'd had one of those, too.

It was just a really cool, relaxed conversation....he learned something about a car he didn't know about, and I got to share some of my knowledge...though I now realize there WERE about 15,000 imported altogether in the three years...I sort of told him wrong. Oh well....added to the mystique I guess!

You know out here in MA there is a handfull Id say but definetely no daily drivers so ppl arent used to seeing them. Im only 24 and this one time i stopped at a traffic light and this girl (probably mid 20s too) asked me if it was my father's car. I told her that it was mine and she got all curious as to why a guy at my age would be driving such a car and started asking all these questions about wat kind of work i did and what not. But you know nothing beats the look of these old guys in Vettes when you pull up next to them in a 7. No offense to old guys or vettes.

Never know. Lots of idiots out there. OP should have pursued and see where it took him. If it was all just convo, then cool he had a cool convo and still kept the car. If he actually sold the thing, it would be for a price our market isn't used to.

There are idiots out there that would pay such a thing. Just plain idiots and idiots who have money out the ***.

Almost like the idiots that buy cars off ebay. I still lol @ that.

A 1k car off ebay is an exception of course. Because if it turns out crappy, you can probably resell it for 1k (or more) or sell it for parts, probably getting all your money back (or more).

I was merely referring to cars like 5, 10, 15 or more thousand dollars.

I think its just idiotic how someone can just click buttons online and become happy by winning an auction (even if its a good deal) on a car you have NOT seen in person, let alone know any feedback of the car itself (by others in the area).

But we have to thank those idiots for letting us make money off them.

This is true. Some people are so funny. I remember the day I bought my fd, driving it home, right around the block from the sellers place, two probably about 18 year olds yell at me, "hey! that car still for sale?" (had forsale sign on the back and all in all, fds are pretty recognizable. I said, "yup, sure is, 25 grand and its yours!" then one says, "thats all those things cost?" someone is unaware "those things" are 17 years old. Should have given him my phone number ..

but then there's the people who know more about your own car then you do. Tring to sell my pretty mint integra, someone insisted it was worth only 3k because his friend who his mechanic just bought an old rusty civic for 2k. And I had a friend telling me for the longest time that fds didn't come factory twin turbo. I argued once and that was it. Anyways, this rant is getting pretty off topic.

To OP, you're car must be pretty immaculate to get that kind of compliments

You know, southern San Diego has proven to be a desolate car enthusiast city....VERY disappointing.

I look forward to the various types of encounters I'll experience once I bring my FD out here.

These kinds of threads make me happy and excited.

I miss the type of attention and admiration that you get when driving an FD...it's definitely different from driving any car, for sure.

A 16+ year old car that still turns heads...Gotta love it.
