Picture this:
It's a saturday night. Everyone's pretty much sober, we're getting ready to go hit some bars. I get a wild hair up my bunghole, and decide that that handle (1.75L) of Cap'n Morgan is talking **** to me.
"Hey, you rat bastard--I'm bigger than that shitty little rotary you've got sitting out there!" ---says the bottle of Cap'n.
Well, **** me, I'll be damned if I'm gonna take that kinda lip from a beverage! Looks like it's time to get shitty before stepping foot in the bar, saving mucho dinero (that can be better spent on race plugs or race gas) in the process.
BUT, I'm going to need some backup on this one......who ya gonna call? Eric Carter. 'Nuff said. Sniff. I miss you guys.

Nothing like preloading, eh Rich?
oh, and the cap'n has quite the reputation around here too. Only he has been no-so-affectionatly dubbed Ninja Morgan. Why you ask? Because just when you think he's gone he comes and bites you in the ***

Here's a dumb question-
How do you tune a car without a dyno?
How do you measure A/F without a wideband O2?
Every car I've ever heard about tuning, except you guys, uses a dyno.

with Datalogit and the wide band while you do 3rd gear pulls to 100mph+.
Lots of fun.

it's not hard... Just need a long flat strectch of road to to 3rd & 4th gear pulls at a steady load....
Start about 3-4k rpm and floor it.. watch the fuel loads/pressue, boost, ignition, the O2 sensor output (yes, he runs a wideband) etc and just optomise the parameters accordingly...
(it's that "optomizing" part that tuners get paid the big bucks for)
edit: ok, 3 people answered the same question in about 2 minutes...

When Steve-o is riding shotgun, he has a laptop plugged into the power fc/haltech/whatever ems and is datalogging and making adjustments, while simultaneously reading the a/f's from the wideband o2 sensor that displays readings on the wideband box.
It's actually more accurate than tuning on a dyno, b/c the car is moving and getting airflow. You just have to have repetitive access to a straight and smooth stretch of road that has no other traffic and good visibility.

I guess I've never seen a wideband O2 sensor that mounts to the car. All the ones I've seen are a pretty substantial rod/sensor thing that goes in the tailpipe...
Thanks for the replies!

Now Cavell, we need to talk about this "traction" thing...

Just got back home from Gotham. Yes, I know it's almost 2 am...
We got the fuel situation pretty much handled, now it's just the breakup at high boost and high rpms.
On low setting of the profec b (spec 2 ) I'm running about 12.5 psi and its quite faster than 14 on my old setup with stock twins. Broke loose in 2nd gear around 5k rpms on one road. Got it tuned completely and I'm ecstatic with the power level and complete smoothness from idle to redline.
Got partially tuned on the high setting of 17-18 lbs, with the exception of the very upper rev ranges because of previously mentioned ignition breakup. Mainly happened in 3rd and 4th gears, but 1st and 2nd gears went by like they weren't there at all. I'd just get done shifting and a second or two later have to up shift again.
It'll be a while on the dyno, unless anybody wants to donate to the "Get Cavell an ignition system" fund.
No? Didn't think so... But be rest assured that its at least into the high 300's mark, and the spoolup is quicker than a ****.

I thought about it... But was pretty sure you'd get pissed if I stopped by or called at 1:30 on my way back home.

BTW, what octane are you guys running back east? I have heard/read that in CA with our shitty 91 octane, that 13 psi is about the most boost that can be run safely. I just got a ported motor, 1300cc's and PFC. Eventually, I'd like to upgrade my turbos. But, if I can only turn up the boost to 13psi, why bother?

You can make the POS 91 octane we have in CA work with high boost, you just need to adjust your fuel and ignition curves to compensate.
Or you can find a local race fuel distributor and get a barrel of good unleaded racing fuel. All you need to do is add 5 gal to every tankful. Or find an industrial supply store that has cans of toluene, which can boost octane in small amounts (but is toxic, and supposedly may be harmful to any rubber fuel lines in the long term).

Thread back from the dead!
93 is good here in TX. I tried toluene a couple tankfuls ago, but if you're running more than stock boost make sure you have cold plugs or upgraded ignition for it.
It burns hotter than regular gasoline and you'll get ignition breakup at higher boost levels.
But it definately gives the car more "oomph". At 12 psi I found more low end torque and faster turbo spool up.
Edit... I got some Trust 10's on my leading, which solved the ignition breakup @ ~17 psi.
