Good FD Experiences!
today is last day for a Java programming class at work ... the instructor is having us go through an example of setting up a java bean using a car as an object... the car has an engine, tires, doors, etc... you get the point.
Instructor: "(to the class) What specifications should we give our engine?"
Me: "1.3 Liter"
Instructor (and class): "What is that? My lawnmower has more than that!"
Me: "A twin turbo rotary!"
Instructor: "No, I think we want a V8, not sure what a ... rotor.. is? (strange look on instructors face)"
Me: (recals Instructor mentioned he is from Denver). "Will your lawnmower go 0-60 in less than 5 seconds?"
Instructor: "Oh yah! And my buddy's Mustang is even faster!".
Me: turns my laptop around to show my red FD on the desktop...
Class: "hey, what car is that?"
Me: "The 1.3L rotary" ... then opens folder with many photos of FD's and diagrams of the rotory engine.
Java class detours to 1 hour discussion on FD's vs V8's... LOL .. I hope I pass the class and get my Certificate.

Anyway back on topic. When I was a kid, I used to play Need for Speed (the original) all the time. My favorite car was always the RX-7. I would watch the in-game videos of it over and over, and practically memorized the stats. The first time I saw one in person I was blown away, and dreamed of owning one. But like many, I come from a family who could never afford such a luxury, and it was never really possible for me to own one until last year. Thus the dreamed died out...but then I took a ride in an FD last spring and fell in love again. Everything about the car just puts a huge smile on my face; the timeless body shape, the sound of the engine (especially under WOT and full boost), the precise and balanced handling, the interior styling...it just fits me like a glove. I don't even mind working on it, even though it's almost always a pain in the ***, it's all worth it. There's just nothing else like an FD. Shortly after that ride, I bought mine. Flew out to North Carolina and drove it all the way back to Denver, loving every minute. It was a brief romance though, for it was stolen a couple months after, and recovered with a blown engine. Now after half a year it is back up and stronger than ever! After that whole ordeal, I care about this car more than any other I've owned. Most people don't understand, they think it's just another old car, but anyone who has ever been interested in cars knows that the RX-7 is something special.
While driving home the other day a bunch of guys on crotch rockets pulled up next to me. They were staring at me and talking amongst themselves. One of them yelled out, "That thing sounds like ****! Put an exhaust back on!" (I have the RB exhaust on mine and personally I love it) I started to say something back, but I just smiled, knowing that I could probably outrun the guy on the bike.
When I was a kid, my 1st of thought of WAYYY deep in the future, when I will be able to drive was, I always wanted a small black two-seater claustrophobic car. I watched the opening scene of Cannonball run over and over and always thought that black sports car (Lamborgini Countach) was so cool. I wanted a Bertone and '88 Fiero GT as well.
Nowadays I feel like that child hood dream is true. I have had my FD for 7 years now. Black with a red leather interior. They say love is blind. No matter what fits this car has given me I just can't ever seem to hate it. It has been M.I.A. for almost 3 years now, due to engine problems etc., but I stick with it. One part at a time to get it back into 100% full operation.
I think the Mazda designers did a superb job with the FD. It is such a sexy car and I like the fact that it has a timeless body style.
I have had on several occasions, 3 people in my FD, me and two girls. I have had several girls that just want to go for a ride in it because they think its so cool. When I used to street race, this car was awesome almost stock...I love the suspension on it, drop the clutch around 5,500 RPM and the 7 will just squat and take off leaving that WS6 Firebird in the intersection. I have won 1st place at the local dragstrip in it. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the interior! They designed the cockpit to wrap the pilot like a glove. Everything is SO ergonomically correct. I have owned 14 different cars and this is the fist 5 speed that I didn't put a short throw shifter in. I may one day, but it has never been a priority like the Honda's and other cars. It is nice getting looks from other drivers. The more I learn about rotaries the more I am impressed by this engineering feat. Amazing that a 1.3L can do what it does. The fact that the car is under 3k lbs and has amazing handling! No other car I have owned has made me feel the way I do when I drive it around. When you own an FD you just want to drive it...even if there is no destination in mind.

When I was 30 or so I wanted a new sports car. I thought about everything in my price range in 1987 and the FC caught my eye. Bought the first one I could find for sale. I was also poor so it was used and had been wrecked and fixed.
I fell in love with this car. When the FD came out in 92, I had to have it. First time I saw a 93, they had to run me out of the showroom. I promised myself I would own an FD.
In 2005 I bought a stock 95 like new. I will probably go to hell for loving this car as much as I do.
I've done the basic mods: dp, cb, intake, radiator, bigger i/c, pfc, fuel pump, clutch, and it's getting a tune Monday. It has 13K miles and looks brand new. I love this car. This is my best FD story right now.

This is my dream car, wouldn't change it for anything. Always been a car guy but my FD tops out every other car I have ever owned.. Had mine for about 6 years and for 3 of those it was my daily driver. Has never failed me
funny thing about having is you never have to brag about it. your friends do it for you
my friends always go around telling people "man do you know what this guy drives? He has a motherfucking rx-7 man! it looks like a time machine ferrari barmobile man!"
One day I gave a ride to a friend of mine, he's a 6'5'' 230 lbs black guy. on the first acceleration at wot all he said is "holy ****" and the held the handle on the door. he's the kind of guy who is "never scared" but he did have a frightened look on his face during a quick tail slide

I'll have to say today was a great FD experience. First day on the track with everything together:

There was a car preparing for LeMONS out there. The only thing that broke was my fuel gauge. I didn't go out the last session of the day because I didn't know how much gas I had left (that, and it was about 100+ F on the tarmac)!

I never say a word to anyone at my school about my car, but EVERYONE knows who drives the white rx7. The best part is how many kids with mustangs and camaros I have suckered 20 bucks out of. "Oh yeah ill run it, only 1300cc's man!"
That is so long ago for me I can barely remember what is what like when people actually cared about what others drove lol.
The FD came out when I was 45 years old. There was an ad that Mazda ran that was in the New York Subway cars with a picture of a VR FD and the caption read "Was it a midlife crisis?" I got to the ad agency that did the ad and they made me a special larger version without the ad content at the bottom and I framed it and put it on my wall, just like I did when I was a kid. I stared at it for about 2 years and then bought a new VR FD. I'm 60 now and have my ultimate FD and still stare at that picture of the FD in that ad above my desk ever day. I now know that it was more than just a midlife crisis. More like lifelong crisis...

Here here! Well put....well put indeed.
The days when you get mates out in their fd's and attack the mountains makes it all worth it. The feel of going around corners fast is amazing.
Just recently i have been on a couple of early morning drives with some other FD's. Waking up early, freezing outside... meet up and just go for a decent drive with no cars on the road on the weekend. Stop someone for a nice breakfast then continue on.
Fd's really are a nice car to drive, even when they are totally stock.
