Gas Smell in Car

Whenever I accelerate I get a heavy gas smell in the car - the heavier/ longer I accelerate, the stronger the smell. Revving the car when standing still does not produce any smell. I've had the injectors checked out and had some vacuum parts replaced but no change at all. HELP???

Could I have a leak in the gas tank, gas tank fuel pump or what. A real mystery. Can anyone help me out. I've owned my 1994 3rd generation RX-7 since 1996, and 56,000miles later, I still love it to death but the smell is very annoying and quite strong, Mild acceleration does not produce any noticeable odor.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!!

Pretty much has to be one of two things:

1 - Any smells of gas must be taken very seriously on this car because the fuel pulsation damper can fail, leading to engine fire and totalling your car. Because you said that normal driving or idling doesn't produce a smell, it would seem that you don't have the pulsation damper problem, but CHECK it out just to make sure! If there is ANY leaking from there, it's an engine fire waiting to happen. Keep in mind that under hard acceleration, the fuel pressure is increased. Therefore, it's still possible that you have a leaking pulsation damper... so check it out.

2 - The smog system has several one-way check valves which manipulate the vapors coming off the tank, as well as something like a PCV valve. Get an electronic (do a search) copy of the service manual, and start checking out the check valves. My guess is that something is backwards, broken, or not hooked up right.

I know i am just a newbie on here but i have had my 94 for about four years and done a lot of work to it. Just the other week i had the same symptoms and it was the fuel line from the primary injectors to the secondary fuel rail. It had split 1/3 of the way around. $166.00 from the dealership hope this helps

I have the identical problem...gas odor smell under boost/heavy acceration...none during idle/normal driving. The issue is now close to 2 yrs old.

Last Sunday after a heavy drive with speed exceeding 130 mph (it was nice)...with car parked in the driveway I wason my knees searching for the cell phone when smell strong gas odor by the driverside rear tire same location for the charcoal canister.

My theory is a bad 1 way check valve between the UIM and Purge Control Solenoid. This would allow presurized air (under boost) back into the canister causing it to vent harder then it should.

The gas odor smell always follow by a psssst sound, and always from the driver side inside car.

I am doing a little experimentation...will follow up with the result.

I had a fuel line leak cause the fuel line installed wasn't rated for FI i replaced the flimsy line and worm clamps with FI line and Fuel Injection clamps and fixed it.

Smile Need a few Replacement parts

https://www.rx7club.com/images/icons...llinglaugh.gif

Can someone please direct me to a web site where I can buy 2 items for my 1994 RX-7 baby. The first is replacement plastic lenses for my stock fog lights. /The second is a replacement front air dam, attached under the front bumper of the car. After 13 years, I am getting my child repainted and I need to spruce the outside up a little. Thank you for your help. erniebaba@comcast.net

Well, it's not a website, but it's the best, quickest, and usually least expensive place to get stuff - and Ray knows what he's doing regarding parts for RX7's:

Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda: 888-533-3400.

MY gas smell under heavy load only was the metal 1 way check valve. test that before you tear everything apart.
