The rx-8 will likely be more reliable than the FD.
BLAH BLAH, reliable=slower.

Rx7 is pretty reliable as long as you do your regular maintence and not trying to rag the car out to death. Rx7 have occasional problems, but the good thing about it is, it makes you want to learn about your car. I would never take it to a mechanic for two reason: they have no idea what is going on, second it is very very expensive. But since we have the Rx7 forum, you can get a lot of assistance and so forth.

so what makes it so unreliable?

Look at this (above) thread for and interesting glimpse at how much money were spending on these FD's.

What shocks me is that aftermarket warranties are available for these cars. For about $2k.

I have been looking into the extended warranty stuff. I couldn't find any company that would cover anything older than 95. Do you know of any that covers 93s?

sorry bro I wish I could help you. I bought my second (and current) FD in 98 so an extended warranty was not an issue.

Spending a lot for mod is one thing, but keeping it running is another. Seems like some hardcore 7 owners modify every bolts on their car. I want to know how much a stock 7 owner would spend to keep it running.

I did a search and found some on the internet. Some would only go 95 and newer. (mines 94) But as I recall I found 2 that would do it. I have since thrown out the info. I started at autotrader.com then just did a general internet search.

I just put the 2k in my savings. Looks like I'll need it sooner that I thought. Got some bad gas this week.

Check that ^ thread out. As far as maintaining, change the oil, fuel filter, plugs, coolant etc every xx miles, depending on driving habits.

You've got to remember, alot of guys on this board are pushing over 350 to the ground and outperforming porsches and Z06s as a result. If you want to keep your 7 relatively stock, you should be fine, as long as you follow the rules.

Horsepower and reliability are inversely proportional, especially with FDs .

nothing for my FD is cheap man! even a light cover (that piece of plastic) is super damn expensive. but well, after all I would be willing to pay.
