found out my cooling gremlin

dumb *** fan motor. it is the right hand side motor looking at the car from in front of it. its dead. i turned on the AC and watched as the left hand side turned and the right hand side fan sat there. that explains my super high temps. im gonna see if i can find a replacement motor and maybe swap out fan blades. what fan blade is supposed to be the better, the four or five blade? i will possibly try that 40 below stuff i was talking about soon. anything to help cooling would kick ***. just had to let someone know

Glad to know you found the issue.

Are you gonna order the motor from Mazda, or get it somewhere else?

i thought i remember reading that the four blade is better too. i guess i have to go to mazda. tried autozone and kragen, neither can get it. ill call mazda and see what my price is. i was trying for the lifetime warranty at autozone though they still hvae to check out at kragen though. i get good prices at all the autoplaces, but i dig the lifetime. this way i can just run em all the time like i do right now. could be why it went out...DOH

I think I remember reading somewhere that the fans each have a different amount of blades for a reason.
If they were both the same fan you would get some sort of wierd frequency match up that would make an odd sound or something?
I think I read that on here.

Do not worry about the odd thump sound that the 5,4 blade set up stops . Go with two 4 blade fans. garfinkle uses 4 blades on several cars with no thumping . He may have two used motors as well . The 4 blade fans are about $34 from the dealer .

Check your fan relays on the passenger side fender. I had one come unplugged. The fan didn't operate because it wasn't plugged in. Even if it is plugged in, the relay could be bad. Replacing a relay is a lot easier, and cheaper than replacing a fan.

Agree with adam c regarding checking the fan relays first, but don't be surprised if the driver's side fan motor really is kaput. Although I haven't seen any threads on it, it seems that the driver's side rad fan motor failing is a somewhat common occurrence. Why, I have no idea . Mine gave up the ghost as well.

My car has been out of comission with a broken PPF for about a month. i installed everything back to where it was before it broke and took it for a ride to see the temps rising(defi water temp gauge). im curious now as to how long the fan may not have been working. it wasn't anywhere near as hot a month ago as it was now.
will my car see some track events if i can keep the heat down. YIPEEEEEEEEE

Blades or fan motor? Motor is the same for both fan blades. Had the same motor as you go bad - got mine used from Pettit ($100). They are close to $200 new. You can use the fan test connector, use jumpers from the working one (disconnect first) and connect to the non working to test (with motor off).

First, make sure they all are plugged in. If one is loose, plug it in and check if fans work.

To check the relays:
Unplug the relay. Connect a wire from the positive battery terminal to one of the connectors on the relay. Connect the other relay connector to ground. When connected, you should be able to blow thru the vacuum tube. When not connected, you should not be able to blow thru.

I used some small diameter vacuum hose to prevent the positive wire from touching the ground wire on the relay. It is important that they do not touch.

uh..."blow through the vacuum tube"? On a fan relay?

Page E-13 in the FSM shows you which terminals on the relays to check for continuity in order to determine if they're still good.

4 blades better then five? Doesn't the '99+ JDM models have seven blades? I would bet the driver one failing is due to battery acid as well from people not having the battery in the box or covered. Don't use water filled batterys!

I was kinda wondering about that myself. I'd figure more blades (up to a certain point, of course) would move more air. Kind of like the turboprop airplane engines that have eight instead of four blades.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but I'm just trying to gain understanding.

If one fan spins (the passenger side) and one doesn't (the driver side), doesn't that tell you the the driver's side motor is dead.

From looking at the service manual, the relays control the speed of the fans, not the operation of one fan or the other. To me, if both fans weren't moving, then it would be safe to say that one of the relays was dead.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks, and yes, my driver's side fan isn't moving!!!

ERIK

Erik,

Your fan motor is dead, or perhaps the fan blades have ground into the housing, which probably means the motor is now dead. Verify that all of the relays are plugged in, and check the wiring to the motor.

If everything checks out, start shopping for a new motor. You might try to buy the whole assembly (shroud, blades, motors) off a junker. I did that awhile back and it's nice to have the spare parts.

hey, my thread is back from the dead. i dont recall both fans moving at the same time unless the AC is on. push the AC button then check the fans. i about **** a brick when i found out that my fan moved after i bought a new one. without the fan blade on there it only spun about 6 times before it crapped out again. i gave it the hand spin test and i could feel and hear bearing grinding on the inside. im sure the motor itself is still good, but the bearings are shot. im going to open it up and see if it can be repaired. whats the worst i can do, screw up crap
