FD vented entire contents of oil pan within one minute.

Started the car to bring it back into its spot on the driveway. Rolled the car up 20 feet, turned it off. About a minute later, I noticed a massive pool of oil (2x3ft) with a trail leading up to the car. It looks like when I started it, the oil pan just **** itself. Probable cause? Car has 90k miles on it, motor and turbos have 20k, with new hydraulic seals from an overfill about 10k miles ago.

Seems like it's coming straight from the bottom of the motor, although there are drips across the lower sway bar.

Clean it and try to trace the leak. Make sure you add more oil before you start it once again. It is probly comeing from a high pressure line such as the oil cooler line, the turbo feed line, and so on. I would seriously check the oil cooler line if the oil pan is ok.

An oil cooler line might not be tightend enough, those things should be VERY tight.

Oil Woes

I had a problem like this with my FC Rx-7. It ended up being one of the lines that goes to the oil cooler.

If it was the (a) main oil cooler line, you would lose all of your oil in about 5 seconds of the system being on...

Good luck finding the leak, the good news is when you find it, it should be pretty easy to fix! (Also, it didn't happen when you were away from home when you would need to have it towed)

If you have a helper, you can always put a little oil in the car, crank it over, and see if it drains when the system is preassurized, or just when it's off. It should help determine which area's to start looking at.

check your clips on the motor to cooler lines to make sure they are still on there. My car spouted all the oil out within seconds out of one of those hoses when it wasn't seated right.

Yup. Rotax is sweet, but I like the Parilla powerband a little better.

Sounds like it's something come loose in the hose system. Car just got towed to the shop today (rotary specialist), so all should be good. Thanks, all!

If the motor emptied the entire contents of the pan in the short time you were moving the car this is definitely not a pan leak or rear main seal. You've got a leak in a high volume area. Get under there and inspect the oil coolers, their lines and the oil filter pedastal. If that turns up nothing then check the turbo oil feed line that goes from the front cover to the top of each turbo cartridge.

Unless he lost the drain plug - I'd think he might have noticed that, though...

Or maybe he should contact the manufacturer of the oil brand used and complain that the oil is defective because it won't stay in the engine...

In all my miles and years of owning 2 RX7's, I have never lost oil like that.

That almost sounded like someone went over a center divider and clipped the oil pan which my brother did years ago.
