Talking FD towing a FD...Kinda..

Hi.

I have a little "bizzarre" thought in my head. Did a search, and couldn't really find an answer (that's really weird for this forum, normally).

Here's the thing.

I have a FD rolling chassis here (RHD) that was stripped for interior, front parts, engine and T/M. There is only the rear axle left.

I got my 2'nd FD from the US with a hitch on it, so I thought about making a Trailer out of the body, and maybe tow it behind the FD (-told you it was crazy) to meets/shows just as a gag. I have seen people done it to VW, Minis, etc, and it looks, ...well....., different/cool..

My concernes are weight on the tow hook. The rear axle will sit very far back compared to a normal trailer, but will the lightness of the FD body make it OK? How much weight would the trailer run? The Body will be cut at the firewall, and the floor/TM-tunnel wil be removed and replaced with sheet metal (thinner).

What do you think? Have anyone seen this before? Comments? Am I completely off my Apexes just thinking such a thought?(-probably)

Looking forward to your posts.

Ciao

Put a hitch on the Cosmo sitting next to it. If its 3 rotor then it should have more of a towing torque.

Yes the balance would way suck. The wheels are way too far back. You would have to weight it in the back pretty good for it to pull right. Or just leave it empty which kinda defeats the purpose if there is such a thing in this case.

Hi.

There would be more than efficient torque in the REW to tow this thing, I think.

The Cosmo will of course get its own Cosmo trailer made, once we are done with the FD trailer.

Just as a bump, have anyone seen something like this made before?

Never seen it done with an FD but I've seen lots of other cars do it.

You typically only end up with the back half of the donor car being a trailer. The reason is tongue weight. Tongue weight is how much weight there is at the actual tongue of the trailer, so this is the amount of weight that pushes down on the rear of the tow vehicle. You need some tongue weight to keep everything stable, but too much forces the tow vehicle to carry the load rather than the trailer. You want to build the trailer in such a way that when it's loaded most of the weight is centered over the single axle of the trailer. That way the tow vehicle just has to provide pulling force, it doesn't have to support the trailer and its load.

Tongue weight makes a huge difference in how the tow vehicle and trailer handle. In order to accomplish all of this you end up using only the rear half of the car. The other way to keep tongue weight down is to use a long tongue. The longer the tongue the closer to the trailer axle the CG is.

Here are a couple of RX-7 trailers. The second one belongs to Blake, not sure about the first.
