FD Horns and SUV's
I pulled into a long, narrow parking lot behind an SUV. The SUV continued 100 feet or so and then began backing towards me. I was waiting back near the entry and thought the SUV had spotted someone getting ready to vacate and wanted to clear for the space. Well, the SUV kept coming towards me concluding that there were no spaces and the easiest way out was to back out to the street. (There was a hidden exit forward known to locals.) I beeped my horns and tried to do an emergency back-up, but fearful of the pedestrians and the car behind me. The SUV kept coming, I kept beeping and the pedestrians scattered and the guy behind me saw my terror and backed into the street. Finally, the SUV stopped 3 feet from my front end. I think the horn was finally heard, because at that point I would not have been seen by a mirror.
I guess the SUV couldnt see me from the mirrors or didn't look first or didn't think that anyone would be there so quickly. Both of my stock horns work close to spec. I guess I should consider a horn upgrade. Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Steve Bradley

I had a car once that had an aftermarket alarm and the previous owner installed a little push button switch that he could use the alarm as a horn....It was pretty bad ***....if you sounded it in trafic people would try and get out of the way thinking it was a cop.

I replaced my stock horns with Hella Dual Supertone horns and consider it $70 well spent. The horns fit on the stock brackets when drilled out to 5/16" for the mounting bolt. There is adequate clearance all around and seem to work well using the stock wiring harness with a ground added back to the mounting bolt. The stock horns are driven by a relay backed with a 15 amp breaker which seems adequate power for the Hella horns with intermittant use.
Thanks to all for ideas and comments and Patrick for the Supertone suggestion.

I put some autozone trumpet horns on mine... the compressor has a problem w/ sucking in dirt and h2o though... I need to remount it and wrap it w/ a filter sheet to keep the horns from getting clogged. I think they are funny as hell when you get up next to the usual cell phone talking dumbass and hold down the button so he can't hear the other person on the other end of the phone.

Here is a pic of them on my home brew radiator setup:
