FD feel at high speed. help?

Hi there,

I've had the FD for a while now and i've noticed that at high speed (60 mph+) at turns or when i go over bumps the car feels a little floaty if thats a good word. For example, if i take a high speed turn and theres a bump i feel like the car will not keep its line. It doesn't feel stable at all. I was thinking if it could be a steering problem and/ or suspension issue. the steering seems fine at low speed driving but on the freeway i feel that its just not as planted. its lowered on eibach springs, and i wonder if it could be blown shocks? if anyone has any insight on this, please let me know. I know the FD is supposed to have superior handling and i would like to find out how could i make it better. Thanks.

Have the alignment checked.

I have the "long track" alignment and like it.

Alignment, check your bushings(I bet they're blown), tire balancing(too much air will cause this, H. Coleman recommends 30 front 27 rear cold), etc. Make sure everything that makes a car "handle" is in order.

Mileage on the car?

I'd speculate that your problem is just the simple age of the bushings and high mileage shocks. At 120k miles my shocks were already pretty floaty and not performing like they should. Bushings made a big difference as well.

I'd check alignment and tie rod ends.

Sounds like you have classic bump steer. It could be one of several causes, or several causes contributing to the problem. Before you start spending money, even for an alignment (a good one isn't cheap these days).....get the car up on a lift and have it given a full inspection by a suspension specialist. Even some of the chain shops, Goodyear, Midas, often have at least one knowledgeable tech in the shop and they offer free inspections. They'll bring you out and show you what they think is wrong. It'll give you a chance to get a good look under your car. I'm guessing your problem is with the bushings - links in the rear....but that's only a guess.

thanks everyone, JConn: that sounds like the best start to finding out whats wrong... i was thinking bump steer since the front looks like its a bit lower than it should be. the tires are starting to tuck under, and i know eibachs shouldnt be THAT low.. it could be the shocks plus bushings.. but i'll have that checked out. ill keep u posted

+2 for bushings and alignment.

My car "used" to do that but not so much now after i had my new wheels put on. I think it was because my other wheels i had werent balanced.

Now my car drives smooth, no vibrations in the steering wheel anymore.

And on a side note, the FD feels smooth as butter at high speeds.

Sometimes when im coming off an off ramp onto the highway and i go wot in 3rd and some of 4th, ill be at like 105-110 and i felt like i was only doing 80. On my DD, it takes a long while to get to 100. lol
