It goes to your oil level sending unit. As long as you do not run low on oil you will be alright.

I would take the time to fix it. No, it's not necessary to make the car start run and drive, but that sensor is VERY important. If an oil cooler line breaks you can empty the oil pan in 30 seconds and that's your warning to shut off and pull over. Saved my *** once in my old FC.

Also, if you're putting the engine in, now is the time when problems like that could crop up. You may think the oil cooler lines are hooked up well, but if they pop loose or if you have some other catastrophic failure you wanna know.

I can honestly say I have never once had an FD oil cooler line pop off, but then again I know how to install them correctly. I have been in an FC that blew an oil cooler line and the huge cloud of smoke and the oil all over the windshield caused us to pull over long before the low oil buzzer even thought about going off.

It is safe to start the car, just make sure you have the proper amount of oil in the engine, then obviously you need to watch for leaks, just like any engine that is being fired up for the first few times.

Anyone that has installed one of the aftermarket oil pans has no sensor at all.

Idle jumping can be be any number of things ...vacuum leak, ISC, PFC tuning, etc

I have seen it several times when someone ran low on oil and spun a bearing. Each time the oil level sender was non-operational. If there is any wire sticking out of the sensor, you wan solder on a new piece. Otherwise buy a new or good condition used sensor.

Drove my 83 for 10 years without any problems and it never had an oil level sensor. It also did not have a cooling system level sensor.

When my 93 sensor wire broke back around 1995, I just cut it off.

All of these extra sensors that they are putting on cars is dumbing drivers.
For a conscious FD owner, It really amounts to an useless idiot light.

But since you are worried about it, you should fix it.

Do you have the Factory Service Manual and Wiring Diagram downloaded? If not, do so as soon as possible.

The coolant level sensor is on the front of the t-stat housing on the lower left (if you are facing it). It connects to a white/clear'ish connector over the top of the water pump housing. It then connects to a single spade black connector near the battery (if you have it located in the engine bay in the stock location).
