FC Coils on FD

Well, my FD Leading coil is now dead...The car was bucking and hold back even if I tried to go full throttle.

I have decided to install a FC leading coil and a MSD 6A,

MY QUESTION IS, SHOULD I JUST INSTALL THE FC TRAILING COILS AS WELL and will the FD ignition run the FC Trailing coils without them being amplified.

Please advise, Thanks

Andre

I'm running the FC leading coil with the Jacobs Rotary pack ignition. My trailing coils are stock. Only the FC leading coil is amplified. I was assured by Chris at Rotary Performance that this setup would be good for about 550rwhp. So far about 2500 miles and no problems, idles smooth and pulls awsome. Gas milelage sucks but what do you expect with 850 primarys and 1680 secondarys. :-) I'm only running 10#s till tuning. I would check your trailing coils just incase. I had a bad trailing coil when I dropped the motor back in. But I would think that the MSD would work just as well. The reason for changing to the FC coil is because they have less of a chance of burning out when amping them.

93FD3S,
Glad to hear that everything is working out fine. I`ll probably just keep the stock trailing and run the FC leading coild with the MSD.

Where did you mount the FC coil?

Any pics would be helpfull

Thanks again,

Andre

I maid a bracket for the coil and mounted it where the AC condensor used to be. Pretty easy. Took me about ten minutes to mount it.

Fab up a little bracket and mount it on the strut tower. Don't bother swapping out the trailing coil. If you are moderatly modded I'd say go ahead and get the MSD amp too and wire it to both.

Sorry I was thinkin about doing the same thing and I was wondering if it will just plug and play? Or do I have to cut into the leading coil wires and rewire them to the FC coil? And can I just mount the FC coil in place of the FD one?

I believe you have to cut the FD harness to wire it into the screw clamps on the FC, but I could be wrong. Also, the FD coil harness it only about $15 to replace.

You're correct. Also, I have mine mounted under where the c/c would be in a dark corner of the engine bay where you can't see it. I have run the FC coil with Jacobs amp for about 3 yrs now and have been very happy with the setup.

question is, why is the stock lead coil prone to failure? does it just get cooked, or is it too small?

Leading coil wires on FD

- yel/blue wire to the MSD's white wire
- blk/red wire to the MSD's (small) red wire

One important note on this install is that you must wire the orange and black wires from the MSD directly to the FC coil. You cannot use the stock ignition harness wires to make these connections since all three coils are interconnected to the blk/red wire. Said another way, do *not* connect the orange or black wires to any wires in the stock harness (especially the blk/red one).

Do you need a PFC to retard the timing with an AMP? I don;t want to detonate anything in my engine hahha.

All the MSD does is amplify the spark, nothing to do with advancing or retarding the timing. So i`ll say no.

Anyone else concur!

The only reason I ask is becasue I went through some of the MSD amps and sawanother model for "turbo supercharged" apps and it had an ignition retarding device.
