Question A/F ratio meter question??

im still new here!!! my mods so far is an HKS catback, downpipe and gutted my midpipe... & i've actually installd an autometer A/F ratio meter for over 2 months now...

The problem: Every time i start the car in the morning i would see white smoke for abt 15sec...

My question: my meter would say very rich on neutral (standing still) and at WOT... it almost touches the 3 green light from the right!!! is this normal?? i hear that runing rich is not a good thing?? is dat y i have white smoke on start up??

better to be running rich than be at the other end of the spectrum!

The stock ECU runs rich by nature. Yes, running leaner can give you more HP, but rotary engines don't take to detonation like piston engines so we normally are on the rich side.

As far as the A/F gauge, it's almost worthless unless you are using a wideband O2 sensor. Using the stock sensor may only give you a ballpark guestiment.

BTW, most FD's usually puff out some smoke at start up. Mine kicks out a puff when it's first started, but that's it.

If you are kicking out more than that, make sure you are allowing your turbos to cool down before shutting down the car. Make sure the smoke at startup doesn't have a coolant smell as well.

Mahjik: i thot i can adjust my A/F ratio just by rotating the screw on the throthel body, is it true? btw, no coolant smell... =) but it backfires a bit at times... is this also the cause of being on the rich side?

You can't adjust the A/F that way. Unless you have a re-programmable ECU (like Power FC, Haltech, AEM, etc), you can't adjust it.

As for the backfiring, that happens since the car runs rich naturally and you have gutted the pre-cat. Have you ever seen a GT car race? Those cars are popping and shooting flames all over the track.

Get an FJO wideband if you really want to know what's going on with your motor. Otherwise you're blind.

I'll second that! Coupled with the PowerFC and Datalogit the system is awesome. I only wish there was as simple way to tune your timing....

FJO is the company's name, probably someone's initials.

It's a Wideband 02 Sensor / AF Meter. It measures your Air to Fuel Ratio. A wideband means its much more accurate in the critical areas and it comes with a 5 wire o2 sensor instead of relying on the stock sensor. It's expensive but its similar to what will be used if you took your car to a dyno shop with a wideband for tuning. If you are going to be modding the car a lot it may be of use, especially with the datalogit.

You can read all about them at their web page. I think it's FJOinc.com. If not do a search on FJO enterprises.

I think the DIY is also supposed to be good and cheaper. I can't personally say.

David

FJO is a company name. Not sure what or if it stands for anything: http://www.fjoinc.com/automotive/
