Exhaust: Flames....Ok, But Sparks?

Hey Guys,
I am pretty familiar with the whole shooting flames bit but what happens when there's spark shooting out the exhaust? What does that mean?

My buddy came to town with his T-78 / streetport pushing 16-18psi...We did a couple runs and I pulld on him REALLY bad...I have 400rwhp and he supposedly has 425rwhp...rolling from 40mph in 3rd we would hit it and immediately I am ahead. Ok, expected since I have the GT35R. But I kept pulling. When I shifted to 4th I was a good 7 cars ahead...

I dont think my setup should pull on his this bad....When he did his "ricer flybye" I noticed his exhaust shot out sparks. Not flames..Sparks...Like if you were to drop burning charcoal on the ground and see it chip away.

Anyway, my frined is never on the board and is a bit clueless. He's owned the car since 1994 and had RP do all the work for him. He's tuned for racegas and thinks that he should just put race gas in every other tank or so. Honestly i'm surprised he hasn't blown the motor yet.

So what's the deal with sparks (not flames)?

Here are some photos of his FD.

This is a stock hood. Someone local did the vents. Looks great but can't say I would have chosen that pattern.

It might also be his packing in the exhaust burning up. I've seen sparks just like you described coming out of my freinds car as well.

I saw that when my friends cat was self destructing. It looked just like charcoal being dropped on the ground. His cat and exhaust were also glowing red. A new cat solved the problem.

Well, he has DP and MP, and a single tip RB exhaust. Will have to ask him how old that thing is.

That's wild. I click on them and they work for me. let me try and attach them again.
Anyway, he's taking his car down to RP to have a bunch of issues sorted out. I pulled on him, "like mad quick yo!" and I should not have. He should be pushing more power than me.
