Cool Which Exhaust

I have a stock 94 touring and am about to install the full bonez cat system and am going to do a aftermarket catback at the same time. I do not like the look of the giant 5" fart pipes. I just want an exhaust system that performs, looks nice, and sounds nice. I don't want earth shattering loud, just a nice, low, exhaust note at normal speed (louder, of course, when I am into it). My main concern, though, is performance....so if it has to be a little loud to perform well so be it. Just as long as it sounds good, and not like a lawn mower on speed. So, let me know what you guys have used, and how you like it. I take this car on long trips every now and then, so keep that in mind. The systems I have been looking at are:

Greddy EVO Evolution
Greddy Japanese-spec racing
Apex N1 Dual
Apex GT

If there are others I should consider, let me know.

I have the Apexi GT spec, it is one of the loudest, if not THE loudest. Not to mention it has a 110mm tip. It does, however perform exceptionally well, especially with a larger turbo. From the info you provided you might be more interested in a Racing Beat exhaust.

from what i've heard, the Racing Beat Dual Tip exhaust is the most wide-spread favorite of all the exhausts

RB looks better!! as far as sound I haven't heard the N1 dual but I would asume it's as obnoxious as the single N1 but I think the RB dual sounds nice

I think I am the only FD owner on here that has the Thermal Exhaust on my car.

Tri-Point put it on with the previous owner.

It has a very deep sound, pretty quiet at idle, nice piping, and doesn't have a huge tip. Since I have never been able to find the exhaust for sale anywhere, I don't know how much it is.

Try finding a Veilside Evolution catback, it has one of the best sounds on a rotary engine. I have one and it's awsome. It's silent up to about 2500 rpm, then it's amaising.

I'm running the Blitz NurSpec, low cost, high quality, good flow and a nice sound, I dig it. I also have a short video clip if you want it, let me know via a pm or email. Good luck, Josh

Thanks for all of the responses. I am getting everything in the morning, and am greatful for the info. My last car was a 98 WS6 Trans Am with 9lb Vortech SC with SQ gears, 38lb injectors, T-rex fuel pump, after-cooler, tranny cooler, custom 3.5" straight exhaust off of ceramic coated headers through off-road y-pipe (no cat) and dynomax 2200cfm race muffler, and more. It was so loud it would set off car alarms three floors up in the parking garage of the Crescent in Dallas. I didn't mind it being loud simply because it sounded like the T-rex in jurassic park....very DEEP sound (it really sounded like a NASCAR). I have now had my Rx-7 for a couple of years (since the TA met an untimely demise at the hands of my GF). I am now getting the bug to start building again (GF was afraid of me building up another because of what had happened in my last one). I just don't want this thing sounding like some Civic whose only mod is a giant coffee can on the back. The RX-7 is a hell of a sport car, and I want to do it justice by the sound and performance like I did in the TA. FYI, the TA's final numbers were 495rwhp and 535 ft.lb. torque. It was a convertible that looked stock..and sounded stock until I got rid of the cat.....

Cool RE: Which Exhaust

For those of you who gave some input to which cat back to go with, first of all, thanks for the input.

I ended up going with the Greddy EVO. I got a chance to listen to and see several different setups. I ended up narrowing down to the FB dual and EVO. I liked the look of the FB (not the biggest fan of giant tips), but could not get away from how much better the EVO sounds. It has a nice, deep note and flows better. So, I went with the EVO, and am already getting accustomed to the big tip on the back.

ONE WORD OF CAUTION: If you go this route (full bonez cat system (hi-flo main with down pipe) and Greddy EVO), make sure you check your boost when you are done. My boost level upped from just below 12 PSI to almost 14 on the big turbo. If I had done the install myself, I would have never even thought to check, and my engine would have probably met an untimely demise since I am about to make several 2+ hour trips in the car. Luckily, I had Rotory Performance in Garland, TX do the install. They checked after putting the system in and adjusted the boost accordingly. They did a great job and would recommend them to anyone. Very helpful and professional.

Question What would you recommend...

OK, I've read about the all the loudest exhausts around. But what about something that still has the performance of the hi-flo while still being able to hear yourself scream in the cab??
I'm running a pretty much stock 96 RS except for some pod filters on the intake & a Mazspeed cat-back system. It's pretty quiet until I hit about 6000rpm then it screams like a banshee. (which is a good thing ;o) Is there anything I can do to give it s slightly more aggressive profile down low & maybe some better performance without being the loudest thing on the street when I'm just cruising??
