Hey, it might work fine, but from an aesthetical point-of-view, it looks like ***. Any reason for the tip pointing down?

Looks good.. they have a muffler that looks ALOT like that with the downturned tip in AUS.. I see it on every other turbo rotary from aus almost.

I've seen the down pointing pipe before on a 7. When I heard about it...I didn't think it would look good, but when I saw it in person...it actually looked pretty good.

 

personally I like it. It looks like the exhaust you would see on a porsche

 

And what Porsche would that be, precisely? The "I ghetto-rigged my exhaust" Porsche? Haven't seen that model lately, must be a few in your neck of the woods, though...

 

A lot of those JGTC cars have downward facing exhaust tips don't they? I know RE makes an exhaust like that, so does Mazdaspeed (I think)..

I don't see anything wrong with it, but what really matters is the rest of the piping...

Look at a "real" race car like an ITS or IT-7 and you'll see a similar theme.

The turn-down piping section is used to aid in noise abatement.

In theory, if you can turn it left or right, you can make your exhaust face away from the sound-check station so you don't have to worry about breaking the dB limit and getting black-flagged. Turned straight down is the compromise for an unknown sound-check station or two of them on opposing sides of the race track...

At the same time you end up with echo off the road though.. I had my m3 track car set up like that and ended up making more noise due to the echo under the car from the road..

 

 

looks like the RE-A Dolphin Tip Titanium exhaust... i really like it, but i'm curious to see how it flows compared to the real RE-A exhaust.

Didn't say it didn't work. Didn't say it wasn't functional. *That* is not a "real" race car, and I still think it looks like ***. I'll take Racing Beat polished dual tips over that any day.

I hear ya Mr. Layne, and I give kudos to "BoostCrzy" for his ingenuity in fabricating his own exhaust. My issue is that it's lacking in aesthetics. A "garden faucet" tip IMO does not grace the rear end of an FD very nicely. But hey, to each their own.

 

You're making a lot of assumptions without any technical data to back it up. I read his post as a request for opinions on the aesthetics of the exhaust... not its performance.

I do have a certain amount of respect of someone making his own stuff... but there are plenty of single tip exhaust systems out there that look better and are either quieter, or flow better. (why would I say that if I havn't even seen the specs ?) because I realize that Greddy, Apexi, HKS, RB etc... have much more $$ for R&D than myself or most other private people have to make an exhaust that competes...

Then again in florida, you're more worried about speeding tickets and such, not getting busted for exhaust violations... like here... in Ca.
I like to maintain a low profile both exhaust and noise wise, and getting the best performance under those circumstances...

But at the same time how can you refer to the entire exhaust as "ghetto-rigged" when you only see one primary asthetic point - the exhaust tip.

F it. We're probably on the same page anyways. I just don't want people to be discouraged (or made fun of) when they attempt to create things on their own - we need more of it.

 

I wonder if he will get less "smoot" on the rear bumper cover. Looks ok to me.

 

Yea, and from a flammability standpoint, I could actually see it being better.
