dropping tranny / need to remove downpipe?

dropping an automatic transmission
does the downpipe and starter needed to be removed?

I'm not sure for auto's but manual you don't

For manuals you need to remove the starter because there's a bell housing bolt behind it as well as through the starter.

ah, guess i need the longer bolts too....
i could not get the starter out, probably some bolt that i cant see, so i am going to try to drop the auto tomorrow and see how it bangs around....

There is a nut on the front of the starter that needs to be kept from rotating when you loosen the bolt. I'd imagine on autos it's the same.

On auto's there are three bolts and a nut that holds the starter on. On Manuals there are two bolts, one short, one long. To remove both the automatic and manual transmissions - remove the starters. Removing the DP is a must on the auto and makes work on the manual a lot easier.

Tom,

When I removed my manual tranny, there was never any consideration to removing the DP. It was not in the way at all.

yes i think removing downpipe is necessary on the auto
it is half stuck

going to try more tomorrow



and baddrx7, you are right, the starter must come out... it is definately different than the manual starter style
