Doin a little work on the FD (Pics and Info)

Actually started this project in January (ordering parts ect.) and started actual work on the car in March. Should be finished this weekend or early next week!

Check out the pics and let me know what you think of my progress so far.

A special thanks to Jeff (a.k.a. turbojeff) for his insight and help .

Man, that looks awesome! I see you have a rebuilt ABS pump - what's the skinny on that?

Keep up the good work!

Thanks guys for the encouragement!

Sparkey - The rotors are Brembo (part of a complete brake kit from RX-7 Store). Here's the link: http://www.rx7store.net/index.asp?Pa...ROD&ProdID=541

dcfc3s - I followed DamonB advise on the ABS rebuild. Basically I bought an ABS pump here on the forum and removed the seals and put them in mine. The hole process is very simple actually. Thanks Damon for the help and advise.

2-rotor - Originally I was going to go with a mid-pipe (cheaper too!) ut I wanted to keep my options open as to putting the airpump back on at a later date. My original cat was pretty well shot, so I talked with Steve at Gotham Racing informed of what my plans were and he recommended this approach.

Unless he's trying to pass emissions I wouldn't hook up the air pump either. It just makes the cat hotter and probably wears it out quicker too.

Fogot to mention in the orignal post.

It's 93 automatic with 69K miles on it. Interior and exterior is near perfect shape. I originally purchased a 93 in 93 with a manual. So I thought I try an automatic this time. Sold my original one with 14K miles on it due to simply not driving it! And yes I still kick myself over that one!

Anyway I want another silver with black leather (my favor color combination) and found this one in April of 03 and bought it for 13K. Drove it for the summer and started working on reliability upgrades Along with some minor suspension/brake/cosmetic work this spring.

Umm, not really. If you run a Catalytic Converter (CAT) with out fresh air going through it, the CAT will clog. It will actually get so hot and just clog itself.

2-rotor - I've done alot of searching on the forum here and other places to confirm that statement. I can't find a definitive answer as to whether removing the airpump will or will not adversely effect the catalytic converter. I guess I'll find out soon enough :-).

Thanks for posting your comments. I'll keep everyone posted.

This is not necessarily a true statement, as a lot of cars equipped with catalytic converters *do not* have air pumps. The air pump is just a system that injects air into the exhaust to promote a more complete oxidation of unburned exhaust gases. Though I am unsure whether or not air pumps extend the life of a catalytic converter, but I do know they are primarily used to lower emissions.

Looks great!

The paint and interior on this car are in unbelievable shape, cleaning it up and detailing the motor just make it look better.

On the high flow cat with no airpump, I don't see the problem with it. Figure when the car is WOT or over 4000rpm ( or so) the air pump doesn't run anyway. The more your in the throttle the more exhaust heat is going down the pipe. So the stock system doesn't melt without the air pump the aftermarket system shouldn't either.

True i agree with your statement. While i can debate my point of longevity of a CAT with or without an airpump, i personally wouldnt do it on my own car but if it works for you and others, go with it. Its just a CAT is an expensive part to take risks/chances with if you know what i mean.

93silverbullet, nice work and very clean. Sorry about semi hijacking your thread.

2-Rotor - No problem, I think a good discussion is always helpful for everyone. I think the jury is still out on the airpump removal debate. Time will tell i guess.

SlingShotRX7 - My future plans include adding an Blitz Small IC. ECU upgrade, and 17" rims. (all probably done this winter). The engine is strong so i'll wait till it pops before I do anthing else to it :-). I really like the look of a stock bodied FD so plans are not to add anything else to the "look" of my car in the way of body kits, etc. I do want to do a couple auto-x's this summer if for nothing else to have fun and qualify for the MazdaComp discount. Jeff (turbojeff) and I were talking about doing a couple of local car shows for fun next year:-)

Thanks to everyone for the comments and encouragement!
