I've been trying purge my system, and did the whole jack up the drivers side a little, disconnect the throttle body coolant line, and fill both the AST and the filler neck. Coolant never came out of the TB line, so I re-attached it, then drove the car, topped it off a little, drove it again, and topped it off a little.
Just went for a quick drive and with the A/C on, during normal driving, my digital temp gauge got up to 225F.
I have also installed the miata thermo switch. When I drove it back to my house, it had cooled down to 215, and I heard the fans kick on. They were only on momentarily as I drove it in the garage, and while the gauge showed 210 before I killed it, they weren't even on. I just tapped a hole in the filler right in front of the thermostat for my sensor.

Any Ideas? Maybe disconnect the TB line again and try filling until it comes out, or maybe filling through the TB line?

also, just added a new thermostat, and a 16lb cap for the filler neck and the AST.

you already did the fan mod where you can keep them on at will right??? I think that fans should be keeps on as soon as you hit 150-180. Personnaly I turn mines on low after i start the car. coolant temps on a good car should be about 180 for normal driving, 200-205 while racing/spirited drives.

so basically what you are saying is that mazda made a car that will overheat naturally? How did these cars manage to last 60k miles? My car has very low mileage, and only a few mods, plus I only drive it late afternoons during the summer heat.

I live in Denver now, and it isn't near as hot. Last time I posted temps above 220, people were freaking out.
Is there an easy way to check to see if the miata switch works correctly and the fans as well. The gauge is brand new as well, unless it is a piece of ****.

I am going to assume that if the coolant level is actually full, then removing the hose from the Throttle Body would cause a sufficient leak at that connection?

I have seen temps in the 220 range. Most city driving yields temps in the 200-210 range. I have not done the fan mod,but when both mine kick on (around 100C which is about 212) my temp drops back down to 92-94 C which is around 180-190 (I think). Also I have a fluidine (SP) radiator.

The easiest way is to take a drive, watch your temps. When/if you see your temps over 210F, pull over and see if your fans are both running. If not, something isn't right as the Miata Thermoswitch should kick them on around 207F.

well, unless the temp gauge is incorrect, the fans didn't come on until about 215, then shut off before any significant decrease in water temp. Would the temp sensor being located in the filler neck be causing any of this? Also, I have a M2 ecu, but I don't think it makes any difference in the fans.

Sounds like your Miata switch isn't turning on the fans when it should. Like Mahjik says, check it out.

The stock setup turns the fans on at around 220 degrees. I think that's way too hot. With the fan mod, you should turn on the fans any time you are going to be in city traffic. You don't need them on when the car is cold, or when you are on the freeway.

I guess the miata thermo switch was a $50 waste.
