Choose between 2 RX7's

Guys, I've found 2 RX7's that I would like to buy, and would like your opinions on which one of them is going to be the better deal..

Both of the car are 1993's Red on Black touring models.

First - Vintage red has been repainted Corvette C5 red. Has the rear spoiler. 5-speed, 87k on the car. Has a new engine, clutch, turbos, flywheel with essentiall <5k. The turbo's will have 0 on them. Racing beat front and rear spoilers. Viper GTS hood vent. Greddy cat-back exhaust. Slight wear of the driver seat and a couple spots of peeling on the center console and driver side panels. Asking price is $16,500

Second- Car has 38.4k original miles, no mods whatsoever, no gauges, nothing..a couple of small dings, a scratch on the front fender. No rear spoiler. Asking price is $18,300 obo.

The first has a few more body mods, and the exhaust and with the new engine and other components essentially brand new. Should I be worried about the 87k on the car? The second car has nothing done to it, but I guess both the cars are essentially stock now.

I know that there are series of realiabilty mods that need to be done, but in their virtual stock form, atleast on the fisrt car, I could do that as soon as I get it..

Any opinions on either one? Thanx

Being that the first one is customized, you gotta sit back and ask yourseld "Do I REALLY like what has been done to it?" If you do, then go for it. Even if the chassis has 87k miles on it, the important thing is the engine. Even so, have you done a good inspection of it? The installer of the engine may have done a crap job, and you MIGHT end up trying to solve someone else's headache.

Now, if you really dont like the customization done to the red one, and you will find yourself either putting stock components back on, or maybe even other different body parts and mechanical parts on it, then you are better off trying to start fresh, even though the other engine has 38k on it.

What about the interior of both cars? I would think the interior on the 38k car is in much better shape than the 87k car.

And which color do you really see yourself in? The black or the red? IF you are going to end up changing body colors, then this really wouldn't matter :p

If I understand you correctly then both cars are red with black interior therefore color does not matter. *shrug*

If you do a good check then the 87k on the modded car really does not matter. Mine has 78k on it but the engine was brand new when I bought it. It will give you problems to start with b/c breaking in the new engine sucks. Mine acted up for about 2k miles but now it is nice and smooth. Furthermore, like flybye said "do you like the mods that have been done or would you do something different". If you had other things in mind then you should probably go with the fewer mods + the interior should look a lot nicer on the one with fewer mods.

The only mods on the first car (BTW, both of them are Red on black) is the C5 repaint and the exhaust. The second car has no mods. The interior is good in both of them. The second one is a tad newer for the fact that it is seldom used.

When I get the car, I would be doing the mid-pipe, exhaust, downpipe, AST, gauges anyways..

I like the redness of the C5 repaint..

go with whichever you like better. imo i would go with the rebuild if done by are respectable place otherwise you are risking it. Mine was factory done so if anything was wrong i could take it back to them under warranty

I say go for the second one. Its a blank canvas for which you can do your work on. Don't buy something that is already done.....you loose interest in it really quickly

Thanks for the input guys, the first car having on the Greddy exhaust makes the choice tougher than it has to be, I guess.. If the first had a whole list of mods while the second one didn't that would have been easier..

But the second one is also closer to me..but more money..

On that note, do you think the $18,300 is a decent price for a car with that mileage?

Keep in mind that the 60k service will be coming up for the 2nd car so you'll need another $500 or so for the job.

Low mileage has better resell value but $18k for a 93' is still a bit much. Maybe $16k flat is more reasonable, especially if it's a private party. In this economy, used cars are hard to sell bc new cars have good financing rates.

Of the two, I would go for the 2nd. The first is also over priced. Maybe $13-14k tops is more reasonable.

In the end, go for the one in better condition. From what it sounds, the 2nd is in better condition. Interior parts are hard to fix and expensive to repair. Exterior paint should be easier to be redone and may cost even less than a few small interior parts.

Are the tires, brakes and other wear items in good shape? Have the car mechanically checked out.

Go for the second one: here's why.

The owner probably doesn't know as much about Rx-7s as does the first. If the engine, etc are in good shape, then consider this. . .

Go to edmunds.com and get a quote on the "market value" of the car. For fringe cars like Rx-7's it's not so valid, but you can use it as a bargaining factor. You can also tell him (it is a him, right?) that some of the more minor problems will lead to large problems that cost a lot to fix.

"I'm willing to pay [say something near that market value] for a car like this in perfect shape, but your's isn't in great shape. this stuff needs to be dealt with . . . . etc" You could probably swing it and ****** the car for around 13k or less unless it is, oddly, in perfect shape.

Right now I too am in the Rx-7 buying game. I've looked at quite a few cars and I know, generally, what they're going for. I checked out a decent 93 listing for around 18 and the owner agreed to 14 almost immediately. I didn't press further because I really wasn't all that interested, though. (Didn't buy it).
