Car had trouble starting, then huge plum of white smoke.

I was trying to start my car and after about two minutes trying to get it turned over and giving it gas it started. Right when it started a huge amount of white smoke shot out the exhaust and it idled at around 3000rpm fairly rough and then it went to 1200 still idling rougher then normal and now its at 1100rpm idling normally with no smoke. What could this have been from?(I started the car yesterday to move it, and it is stock)

My guess is when you made the short move of the car, you flooded it. Rotaries are notorious for flooding when started up, run briefly and then shutdown.

How did it start after you had this episode?

Once you got it started today, however, have you tried to start it since? If so, how did it start the second time?

Then it was probably flooded. Happy motoring!! Make sure in the future that you don't start up and shutdown too rapidly.

^^If it becomes a regular problem in the future, then you may have leaky injectors.

Dont worry bout it to much, mine does this almost everyother start!

how many miles does urs have on it, if this is the first time chances are it was from the rapid start and shutdown, and start.

if it persists, you could have a coolant leak. mine started doin this after i boosted when it was cold, yah (my dumbass mistake)lol. anyways now i just have to fill it with coolant every week.

but almost positive it flooded itself a little.

if you happen to rapidly shut it off again. just hold down gas and turn over. than turn off. and start normaly.

The engine is a Mazda Reman with 30,000 miles on it, it wasn't a rapid restart, it didn't start on the first try.

yeah if you do it again:

hold down gas, turn key, let engine crank for like 5 sec. this will clear the chamber.
than just start it.

worst case is bad coolant seal, leaked coolant into combustion chamber, then had to burn/push out all the coolant (white smoke, i.e. steam).

but if the car gets badlly flooded it usually makes serious white death until it burns off. (from all my experiences)

color of smoke is tricky.
