Question Can a rebuilt engine be rebuilt?

How many times can an engine be rebuilt? Say a remanufactured engine still relative new, could it be rebuilt, again? And what is the average engine life of a rebuilt/ported engine? Thanks y'all.

anything can be reused depending on whether the specs are with in tolerance or not. if they are in. . . youre clear. . . if they are out. . . youre not clear. simple as that. you as the builder have to make the decision to replace certain items as you are the one that sees what is actually wrong with them. if something is borderline. . . its a good idea to replace it. you dont want it to fail right after a rebuild do you?

Hey Paul, you know Vince at the Performance Garage, didn't he have his engine rebuilt like 7 or 8 times?

haha, he sure did. i think it was due to them trying out new stuff in the tuning world. . . who knows. haha. i do know that his builder had such bad luck with atkins 2mm seals that he quit using them and started using their 3mm seals ONLY. he wont rebuild unless it has a 3mm upgrade involved. kinda crazy, huh? haha, each to his own.

I'm thinking of getting a rebuild. What is usually changed/kept? What possible mods can I get in there while it's getting rebuilt? Race rotors, oil mods, porting, rotor clearing, bearings, what?

Check out www.atkinsrotary.com and www.mazdatrix.com for info on their stages of rebuilds to give you an idea of what parts are kept or replaced, depending on the level of rebuild you choose.

Generally, all seals and gaskets are replaced with new Mazda OEM or upgraded items. Sometimes you can re-use certain seals, but usually a rebuild replaces them all with new ones.
The main parts (rotors, housings, plates) only need to be repaired or replaced if they got damaged when the engine gave out, such as throwing an apex seal and having it chew up the rotor housing.
Bearings are usually replaced.
Everything is totally cleaned.
Most guys opt to do some form of porting while the engine is being rebuilt. Extended Port (large streetport) seems to be the most popular choice. Oil jets are enlarged to increase oil flow.
Can't think... getting late. Hopefully that helps a bit.

What about seals? I understand Mazda's OEM seals are basically made of silicon with a thin viton coat. I'm getting a rebuild due to a coolant seal gone bad. Would going for all viton seals for oil/o-ring and whatever possible help? What about o-ring protectors? I bought my car with around 60k on it. I now know I bought the car with the the o-ring ready to go. When I had it inspected everything was fine. It's all stock including catback so heat was definitly the slow killer and made my o-ring fail just recently. Any more suggestions. I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

You in Marietta, look into BNR in Alabama, instead of Pineapple in Oregan, just a thought.
