California owners I failed smog due to EGR. Help

Have any of you failed smog for egr valve not bogging or turning off your car? What is the normal reaction for the egr test? Please don't comment "sucks you live in Cali" or "thank God I don't have to go threw that." I'm looking for useful info. Thanks

My fd isn't reacting at all so it failed. Is it most likely stuck or this is normal?

Is your EGR throwing a check engine light? That would happen if its not operating at the correct times when the engine is running. When I did my Cali smog they just did a visual on the EGR...

the FD will not do anything noticeable at idle when the EGR valve is activated. the EGR valve is teeny, and its not supposed to work at idle in the first place.

i could swear there is a bulletin about this, but you just need to go to a different smog shop. the CEL will turn on if the EGR isn't working, its in their book

The only difference between a 49 state and a 50 state EGR is a small switch that is depressed when the diaphragm is engaged. I'd check to make sure you don't have a 49 state EGR.

Have you tried taking it to another smog shop? Every time I go smog my FD they just usually visually inspect to see if it's there and that it is connected.

Sum counties have an enhanced smog and sum don't. So they have to actually test it. I'll try to find a lazy guy tech that just visually does it but I'll update u guys. No check light at all

Just say your car is swapped with 95 parts. 95s don't have EGR and the tech doesn't check.

they are not supposed to do anything more than check that it is there and that the light is off. your smog guy failed, it happens

i live in CA, san diego. they did visual regarding the EGR, and all other equipment. Couldn't find the charcoal cannister and i was too noob to point him in the right direction. passed me anyway after claiming that i 'must have relocated it', lol.

(was in the stock location, just didnt know where it was back then)

point is, try another shop.

yeah if they test it to make sure it holds vacuum its ok, i guess, although the ECU throws a code...

i tried to smog a 99 FD once, and they spent something like 45 minutes looking for the EGR valve, and told they couldn't smog the car because they couldn't find it, which is fine. it was in my toolbox after all...

i took it to a different shop, and the car sails through, it runs so clean its funny.

why is it your job to know where the charcoal canister is? my smog guy has a book, i don't think it tells him where anything is, but it tells him what is on the car.

the FC is a little like that, it uses a 3.5mm line a the tank vent and a 6mm line to the engine, and i guess every single other car in the universe is the other way, so they always want to put the pliers on the wrong hose
