EGR Code 16 "repair" experience

So I get the check engine light, pull the code, its 16, the EGR valve. I have a 94MT with the feedback contact.

Options:
replace
ignore
get out year non cali ecu
put in a jumper circuit

I went with the "put in the jumper circuit".

First attempt was with a regular automotive type 12v relay. Works fine but you could hear the relay clicking. So being **** about it I searched for a solid state device. Yea, could have made up a circuit with resistors and transistor but there HAD to be a sold state 12v relay with normally closed contacts.

After alot of searching through mountains of normally opens or normally closed that are 5V I found a single inline chip. Its Clare Opto CPC1219. $1.40 each. I got a couple along with a IC mount and small circuit board. Soldered it up it works great.

I took some pics and if anyone is interested I'll post them.

Nice write-up, I opted for the non-cali ecu and haven't had a problem with the EGR valve for close to two years now.

on a side note I didnt seat one of the ecus connectors all the way and I ended up with the dreaded 3000rpm hesitation. Pulled over, pushed in the offending connector and all was well again.

I just picked up my Fd a week ago and they pulled the same code 16. The shop said it was over $600 to replace but said to hold off on it. The check engine light comes on and then I shut off the engine and restart the light goes away. I plan to go with Power FC in the future. What happens if I just ignore it and do nothing?

^ nothing

I went with a federal ecu for Cali smog, passed the sniffer with flying colors a couple of days ago, you can pick up a federal ecu on here for very little $$$, and no need to tamper with the harness is a plus

+1, A few years ago, I built up a circuit with a couple of resistors and transistors I had on hand. It works fine.

The solution offered here using the opto isolator is even more elegant.
