CA Smog check with PFC

Hi,

Just to report my CA smog experience.

I went to the station with M2 airbox and large IC still installed. I left the PFC in the car because my check engine light stays on with the stock ECU.

First the tech look for the check engine light and he couldn't find it so he won't test the car. He didn't care about the IC and airbox.

I asked for him to check if the car will pass and he hooked it up.

With the PFC idle will pass but at 2500 RPM the HC(ppm) over 100 so it won't pass.

I drove it home and pop in the stock ECU and the check engine is still off during idle. I knew it will come on anytime so I took the car to the station right away. I showed the tech the check engine light is working.

I asked him to pre test it again and it looks good.

Went through the real test and no problems.

He didn't test the EGR system or I may have failed since I know there's something wrong with the EGR system. It's way too hard for him to test anyway.

On the way home the check engine light came on but I didn't care anymore because PFC is going back in.

Smog time

I have a quick question. I'm going in today to get smogged and I'm hoping to pass first time around. Prior to buying the car, the car had failed twice, and that was due to the stock cat The previous owner purchased a new cat and passed smog. He had all bolt ons minus a midpipe and pfc.

Since then, I have added that midpipe and PFC. I took off my midpipe and put the stock cat back on, but I was wondering if the PFC will cause me to not pass? I have the stock base map on with the PFC and the car runs pretty rich so I should be safe correct? I know that I should drive around to make sure the cat is warmed up but other than that, should I be fine?

I know this is an old thread, but why does the CEL come on with the stock ECU put back in? That's what happened to me when I tried to put the stock ECU back in.

There is no reason for it to come on if none of the emissions stuff has been unplugged.

I passed the roller test with PFC, commander still attached lol. The guy was like "Your CEL DOES work, right? *wink"

The smog tech musta been a fan of the rotaries.

Yea, my Dad took it in today and it failed before even started because the CEL. I have a guy buying the car tomorrow and I need to get smog done. We tried putting stock ECU back in last night and the CEL stayed on when the car started. We disconnected the battery when installing and everything and then disconnected it again to try and reset the ECU but still CEL so he tried it with PFC (I took commander out) and the guy didn't pass because CEL wouldn't work.

Did you reconnect the four emissions-related wires that you have to disconnect in order to install the PFC properly? That's probably why your CEL came on.

I didn't have to disconnect anything when I installed the PFC. The needles were already gone.
And the car passed smog prior to getting the PFC for when I bought the car.

they dont test the egr system in california if the vehicle is put on the rollers, if it passes they assume it works. if its unable to go on dyno they will test it

i dont think the pfc supports the emmisions system required for california, i dont think it works with the egr, and im not sure if the tech notices the commander it will fail, get a pre-test done

The PFC does not light up the CEL on startup, which will fail you immediately. If they do let you get away with that (or you rig the CEL light like some of us have), the 25 mph test needs to be run in 3rd gear, not 2nd, as the PFC turns the air pump off at lower rpm than the stock ecu.

Best advice: if you still have stock injectors, put the stock ecu back in. It's a no-brainer.

Did you even bother checking what Code the stock ecu was reporting? Seems to me that would have been the first step in the trouble shooting process.....

CA Smog check with PFC

My son's at work and I'm trying to get it ready for smog. I put the stock ECU back in. The CEL stays on (don't have a reader to see codes). Does disconecting the battery affect the ECU (deleting codes like a Porsche)? Any suggestions.

Ground pin 10 in the diagnostics box and count the CEL flashes (with the stock ecu back in). More details on this procedure and the Code breakdown are here: http://www.fd3s.net/engine_codes.html

If I do the Dale Clark tap in, it should work with the PFC correct?

I unplugged the commander and didn't bring it to the smog place just incase he saw it.

Rynberg, the reason why I didn't put the stock ECU back in was because it threw the CEL.

Guy isn't coming tomorrow because of smog :-( This is a big priority that I need to get passed before I have people come check out the car.

Explain the rigging please Tyler.
