Buying my first FD

Greetings fellow rotar heads

Recently, I've been in the market for my second car ( fun weekend car? )

and once owned Rx8 from 2005 to 2011, this will be first FD.

FD always been my dream car, and now that I saved some money and have a very

reliable practical car, why not look into some good old FDs?

and I came upon this

1993 Mazda Rx7 R1 *Prestine Collectors R1* FRESHLY REBUILT!

car looks pretty solid and clean

now I know owning a rx7 will be different from owning a rx8

this is where i need some help fellow rotar heads

I'm going to go in for a test drive soon, what should I look for? buying a used FD?

looking at the list of upgrades, they seem pretty solid

ps. I'm located in West LA, and I can't find any good rotary mechanics around my area. Anyone know any good rotary shop around LA??

Way overpriced and really no info as to who did the rebuild and what parts were used. The car is basically stock with a few minor bolt ons. No high end parts really that I can see. Bumper is banged up. Overheating doesn't lower compression, it causes a coolant seal to fail so something is up with that. Factory wheels are not Enkie. Interior looks worn or maybe just bad pics. The fact that it still has a stock ast tells me whoever did the work is clueless or the current owner is ignorant. Personally I wouldn't pay more than 10 grand for that car. You can find a nice single turbo car for that price or buy a cheaper one and built it from the ground up so you know what you are dealing with. To put into perspective, a friend bought a mint 93 with under 10,000 miles for not too much more than that. There are plenty of them out there as well as some sellers on here that often have well sorted cars for sale. Take your time finding the right car. You will be happier in the long run.

Hahah thanks Mazderati!
nice read

yess, i've been mostly active in rx8club from 2005 to 2011.
and I only came to this forum very seldom.

Now that I'm getting into more and still reading around the forums, found some shops in LA
and reading about how to keep the FD reliable.

As much as I would love to, with very little knowledge of the car, I don't think I should buy something really beat up or cheaper to work from the ground up.

and for a pretty solid one, I'm willing to pay about 20000.

some very nice ones are going up to 30k to 35k 0.0

but I'm looking for something very close to stock

These aren't the droids you're looking for...

Do yourself a favor. Get an FD with a pedigree.

Go with what Narfle said. Buy a car with good history that can be backed up.

RIP saved money. RIP wallet.

lol

Oh and definitely,160k miles, is a NO, not for 20$, rebuilt or not.

As for rotary shop around LA, these have always been my two:

Lucky 7 Racing, duarte--great reviews from the West section of this forum. Great reviews from me. They will be doing my diff/motor mounts/ clutch/ trans work. Labor 70/hr

NeptuneSpeed, OC -- some old school RX/Apexi tuner from Japan's shop. Started with them, but a bit pricey and out of the way for me. Labor 90/hr

Lastly, my car is located in LA as well -- it is mostly stock, '95 PEP. if you ever wanted to check it out/go for a ride etc let me know!

First and foremost you live in L.A. and can't find reliable rotary shops??? Los Angeles has a plethora of shops...

But anyway the 160k doesn't bother me because its a 23 year old car (first sold in 1992). Realize that's less than 7k miles a year. Not too bad really.

What bugs me about this car is the condition of the engine bay. As its dirty, plastic pieces are faded, and the AST is one step away from going south. Which to me that is a great indicator of how a car has been maintained overall. So it doesn't surprise me the car's interior and front bumper are beat. I wouldn't be surprised either if the car's suspension was sloppy as well or required pillow ball replacement.

Look for a car with the most meticulous engine bay and you will very likely find that the owner was extremely meticulous on all aspects of the car as well. For instance constant oil changes, coolant flushes, preemptive component replacement, not letting repairs slide, car not abused, ect... Anyway you get the point

I lol'd at this "My fd is a perfect example of an unmolested true Enthusiast Sports Car" after listing all the performance mods that had been done to the car.
