You should watch for the FAQ in the new members section.

Question

You bought a FD, did a LS1 conversion and now you are asking what to look for when buying a FD?

u have to educate yourself on rotaries
admit the fact that they arenot reliable....until u do some minor mods... still who knows
do a compression test.. very important
try to get the info if the motor was rebuilt at any time
how many kms after the motor wa rebuilt
wat mods have been done
look for leaky turbos
oil leaks
take for test drive
notice the boost pattern 10,8,10
any gear grinds

I was planning on keeping them both or even selling this perfectly clean one for a decent modded car. I just kinda want a feel for what any of you would do given the situation with no compression test yet its going fast there are 3 guys in line right after me for 9k so I am kinda being rushed into it which I HATE!!!

It might be clean but even a really excellent engine might not last much past 100k, especially if you don't baby it and being realistic you probably would not. Just keep in mind that the cost might be much more than 9k if you have to do any serious repair. A Mazda dealership will probably do a compression test for $200. You can buy a tester and get a general reading yourself fairly easily if they will give you access to the car.

Tell the dealership to do a compression test and Ask them to put it on a lift and have them take off the undertray. Alot can be revealed from the right perspective. Plus I would want to see what the undertside looks like, see if the DP is still stock etc.... If they want 200 bucks, tell them you will pay for it if you don't buy it and they will cover the cost if you do.

Either way,if you discover the compression is bad you will know whether or not to make them lower their price or jump. Can't tell anything by looking at your pics...

Ran the vin through my dads dealership which is the honda/mazda dealership the vehicle was purchased at. the car has 91k miles and has been driven maybe 2k miles in the last three years. in early 08 the car had over $4,000 put in it in new vacume lines and a few other things and that was at 89k miles.. I put a deposit on the car because there was another guy willing to buy it today but i was first in line. I will get a compression test done and let you all know what the numbers are. but I think the car runs good never owned a rotary never ridden in one and never driven one till this car my car with the v8 was a roller when i bought it. The car it self handles great and it seems to start good cant see any black smoke on startup its a little colder now so theres some white smoke untill the condensation is gone but the turbos pulled. and im not sure what else I can say about it. But i will let you know the compression numbers and I think ill take a chance with it.. Any other ideas?? comments?? anything???

Creaks in the suspension? Lots of Shifter movement when you get of the gas? Noisy Steering?

Make sure you get it good and warm (you will need to for the compression test anyway) and give a run through its paces. Also if you are not going to put it on a lift watch for alot of engine movement under revs when you are not moving. It will just help you determine what to fix/upgrade first. If the stock Motor Mounts are still on there that could be an issue. Other than that... if the compression is solid and its realitively unmolested... Nice Find!

Now that you say that I did notice a bit of a bump on revs with standing still. The car shifted great no grinds or anything like that. Whats the issue with the bump sitting still? oh and i think the car has a leak in the heater core because its got a slight steam out the vents after a while.

I hope that there was a lot of work done for $4000. Vacuum lines and a few other things should not cost that much. You could rebuild and reinstall an engine for that much. Nice that you are able to find out some history. Under the hood it looks completely stock with all the oem ducts, battery box, plastic ast. On an older RX-7 I would much rather buy a stock one than one that has had multiple owners who all did their own modifications. This might turn out to be a real nice car. Just keep in mind that the original engine can only last so long and I am an optimist and a firm believer that they can be reliable but the reality is that many don't make it to 90,000 for a lot of different reasons. I hope you get some good compression numbers and that it all shakes out well.

Compression numbers were just over 100psi had even bounces and all and everything with the car seems good no smoke starts right up even in the cold when it was raining. so i bought it!!! haha so its no where near as quick as my v8 but what can you expect from a stock car i guess but it still has a lot of top end and is a very quick little car. It truly is a very very clean car im not sure what I want to do with it yet.
