Burning Oil

I picked up another FD and it was running fine after I did a little maintenance to it. Now all of a sudden after the car warms up it starts burning a lot of oil, blue smoke comes out of the tail pipe and up from around the twins. Yes, I'm sure oil from the smell and the way it lingers in the garage. The car has intake, DP, high flow, exhaust, and a tune on the factory ECU.

The rear smoke looks like this :

(not my car)

Engine bay smoke looks like this:

(again not my car)

From my research, it looks like there are only three things that can cause burning oil:
- Oil in the intake tubing
- Turbos seals are bad
- Bad engine seals/control rings

Intake:
I checked through the intake system and it's dry from the turbo outlet to the throttle body. I checked the PVC valve and it works and the line was dry. I read that perhaps the OMP vacuum lines might put oil through the intake, but again I didn't find any in the intake (not exactly sure where they tie in though, so I couldn't check them for oil).

That leaves the turbo or the engine oil seals. If it were the engine / control rings wouldn't it start smoking fairly soon after start up? Why would the engine have to warm up before it started smoking (We're talking 1-2 minutes or so). Wouldn't oil in the combustion chamber would burn from the get go?

If it was the turbo seals, it could be leaking into / pooling up into the exhaust. Then as the exhaust heated up it would start smoking. To me it seems like the turbos, no?

Is there anything else I should look at?

Yes, after warm up. There is nothing at start-up for around 1-2 minutes. Then the smoke starts, just like in the videos above.

I had this problem i didn't know if it was my turbo or engine that was bad.

A easy way to test it is to start your car with the turbos off the engine remember to close off all the oil and coolant lines.

If it still smokes then its your engine if not then your turbos are bad.

The way you described your car sounded exactly like mines and it ended up being the turbo that was bad.

As you could see in the video it doesn't have a turbo on and its not smoking.

Whenever I've seen cars with bad oil control rings, it has smoked immediately upon startup. The longer the car has sat for, the more smoke.

It only really happens on very high mileage motors or on bad builds.

Just curious....can you keep driving a car like that for a long time (bad oil control rings)?

Reviving this thread,

Do I have to block off oil return lines?
