whats up guys. im used to piston motors, and im pretty new to rotary's. but my question is....is there any way to
"bulletproof" a rotary motor? what kind of internals can you use to provide the engine with a longer lifespan while driving under heavy boost often? how much boost can a 13b hold? and lastly, i hear alot about 3mm apex seals. what are they and what do they do? any info is greatly appreiciated...thanx

im not sure how much boost a 13b can hold but its not too low. as long as its tuned right and doesnt ping and all that stuff your good but its hard building a rotoary that works perfectly. apex seals are kind of like piston rings, they go in the corners of the rotors im pretty sure and have contact with the rotor housing.

I'd say the first thing you need to understand to "bulletproof" the 13b is that there is no need to run heavy boost to get good performance. If you do some studying you will recognize that there are many happy owners of reliable FDs operating under 12 psi boost.

"Bulletproofing" a 13b involves doing all of the reliability mods and operating within the limits of the ECU, intercooler, turbos, and fuel system installed on the car whether stock or aftermarket.

There's no such thing as a bulletproof turbo rotary. With good safe tuning and good maintenance, a close to stock boosted motor should last 80-100k without any problem. The more you crank up the boost, the smaller your margin of error becomes and the shorter the lifespan of the motor.

bulletproof, schmulletproof. . . drive the **** out of it and enjoy every second. . . dont mod it heavily and have fun. . . otherwise you get stuck with a car on jackstands sitting in front of your house for over a year. . . people ask you how far away you are from getting it done and you remember at that time that you actually own one of these damn things. . . hahaha. have fun, dude. . .

really man, unfortunately due to the heat this thing produces. . . its somewhat impossible to "bulletproof" a turbocharged rotary engine.

Amen!! That is about the best answer and the most accurate that I have heard yet. Plus someone else had a point with saying that you don't have to boost heavy to have a fast FD. Just stay with low boost until you have a few years under your belt then worry about boosting the big numbers. Even though when you do that the car starts to really really lose it's "streetability."
