Bulletproof 13bt

is this even possible? i'm considering throwing one in my '87 sport to make some good power but i've heard so much about rotarys breaking and being unreliable i wanted to check it out for myself. if you have a daily driven, reliable, modded 13bt im asking you to post up w/ a list of mods and state just how reliable it is. im searching for the "bulletproof" 13bt..

the KEY to not having issues with your TII is TUNING.

if you NEVER detonate it, it'll last forever.

Get yourself an EMS, remove emmissions, go pre-mix.

premix + turbo = generally a bad idea

it lowers your octane, the stock oiling system (arguably) does not significantly.

Lower octane = higher chance to detonate it = greater chance of failure.
The stock Oil metering system (at least on s4's) is awesome and should be left alone.

It lowers your octane by such an insignificant amount that who cares. And besides if your so worried about reliability you should be filling up with premium anyways.

umm

ANYONE running a modded, powerful 13Bt will be running at least 91 octane.. I run 94.

And if race gas were only slightly more money (say, 50-$1.00 a gallon) - I'd be running race gas.... turbo cars need all the octane they can get their hands on.. more octane = more boost and more timing = more power!

no need to go premix unless you are too cheap to buy new mop lines.
i rather have a functioning mop than premix.

I premix. After tearing down many 100k+ mile motors, it's obvious that the stock oiling system is lacking. It's a hassle, it's expensive on top of gas--but aside from that, I have more peace-of-mind knowing that my housings are getting evenly coated with oil.

If you want peace of mind with a TII, remove the emissions clutter (IMO), simplify the vac. setup, replace the PD, inspect/replace the OMP lines, do all of the basic tune-up stuff regularly, check your oil a lot, get your fuel-system up to snuff and don't run too much boost.

With these cars, it's really up to the owner(s) on how well they'll last.

Let me clear something up. Rick Engman (probably didn't spell right, sorry) says specifically that PETROLEUM premix oil lowers octane, BUT, SYNTHETIC premix DOES NOT!!! Just a little fact for you. It's in my book that's based upon his knowledge.

you will see wear if you tear apart a 100k+ motor, premixed or not...
if you think the stock mop is at fault for that... maybe you need to re-gather your thoughts...

the stock mop doesn't give pressure it just drips oil into the chamber. screw that. i'd like to have some control on lubricating my engine, especially if i dropped 4k on it from pineapple. with premix you control how much oil is actually going in.

And if you run premix that means you can put really high quality synthetic oil in and won't have any worry about it leaving deposits because it doesn't enter the combustion chamber correct?

Yeh, and when the ECU cuts fuel entirely on deceleration? (Engine Braking) what is lubricating it? :p

(I run MOP on my TII and a modified MOP + Premix on my S5 N/A)

OMP FTW! No such thing as a "bulletproof" rotary engine.

I see TIIs with 175K or more on them on a very regular basis. And the N/As? :-p
