build or buy an FD

I have a 91 civic and I am saving for an 3rd gen. I can't decide to buy one for about 7k without an engine or messed up(just a cheap one), or buy a 20k $ one and just build it up from there. I am looking to push 450 rwhp and run low 11's. If anyone has any thoughts on this just tell me.

Thumbs up

it depends on how much you know about the car. if i were you i would does as much research as possible to save yourself both time and money. if i had to do it over again i would by a cheap one and start from scratch. but i'm glad i didn't when i frst got mine.

If you can find one where the only problem is the engine, build it from there. Don't go for something with a bent frame, nothing but heartache to be had there.

Depends if you want to put alot of work into it, or not quite so much. Do you want to put all that time and effort into starting from the bottom and working up, or would you prefer it be done.

I'd say start from the bottom and that way you know everything has been done the way you want it and done properly!

Buying one with no motor is the perfect opportunity to put a 20B in it!!!!!! As long as the body is in good condition, it does seem strange as they are selling with no motor...

Yep good luck finding one with a blown motor, or in need of drivetrain for cheap as they are few and far between. My personal opinion, buy one for arond 15k and mod from there. Of course you're spending more on the car from the get go but you'll get to drive it while you're modding it and if you build one up that needs a motor it will likely take a couple months to get drivable.

I agree, most of the time, FD's with a blown motor have more than the eye can see. Just get a nice FD, unless you are planning to turn this into a pure race car. Otherwise there is no excuse.

I suggest you get one with a blow engine, you will not be able to run 11's in a stock fd engine for very long, especially if it has 40-80k miles on it. (who knows how the previous owner raped that car).

BTW: If your willing to buy one for 20K, I'll sell you mines!

Good luck dude

If you are willing to learn, put a lot of time and effort into it, go w/ and FD w/ no engine.
Start fresh. Build it up the way you like it.

start out with the blown up one if you don't have to drive anywhere for the next 3-4 weeks. But you prolly won't get to 11's any time soon. That takes some pretty hefty modding and time. Have you thought about insurence? You know at 16 thats gonna kill you with an 3rd gen. For a 16 year old with a 3rd gen might cost upwards of 4000-6000 a year. (simmilar to a porshe 944 turbo) alot of money. i would hold off until you are 25.

No way...I'm 26 and just got mine 6 weeks ago. Course, I don't have a gf right now, but the $$ is still getting spent on it.

I'd say the average person in the 11s spent at least 20k to get there, ON TOP of an already nice running car. Just FYI. (Cheapest way to get into 11s: Z28, just mho)
