Boosting problems

My car isnt boosting correctly. I just fixed my flooding problem and now im trying to figure out exactly whats keeping my car from boosting before I take it to RicksRotary.

Also, me and a few buddies are sensing an electrical problem because I get a weird things that happen sometimes. For example, my headlights pop up when I turn sometimes, so I think something is shorting out or grounding out and causing this. Sometimes they pop up together, sometimes they alternate and just randomly pop up.

But anyway, back to the turbos. I had a small buzzing sound with the key in half on position or when I turn off the car (because of the turbo timer) and its coming from the top rear of the motor. I was told its possibly a bad solenoid or something of that sort. I dont think my car is boosting at all because I never hear any BOV sounds, but, on my gauge I get a 2-0-2 pattern....

Possibly a solenoid? Electrical problem? Maybe a vaccum line? Any help is appriciated, I am just curious what is wrong before I actually take it to the shop so I can have some type of idea what to expect...

Thanks in advance.

HEy Dude, I was getting no boost before and all it turned out to be was a hose that popped off the pressure chamber (and a cracked check valve)...go through and check all your coupling hoses (Y-pipe and intercooler hoses) for holes and cracks...you will need to take them off and look because some cracks aren't visible and only open up under boost...as far as the electrical thing, got me there dude.

Hm. that seems like it could be a possibility because of the 2-0-2 pattern i get. I'd imagine that if the turbos were damaged or if something was really wrong, there would be no boosting at all on the gauage (correct me if im wrong).

it seems like there is a connection that is loose or that there is a leak and its not getting full power like its trying to boost but there is a hose not making the right contact or something.

I just found a split intercooler pipe on my R1 and am only getting a 5 - 0 - 9 pattern. You need at least 7-8 psi to get the secondary turbo online. I can take pictures of the split hose it for you if you like. I'm about to order a replacement and will be tearing the car apart in a day or two.

Typically if there is a problem with a split pipe or possibly like a cracked or leaking hose. What are we looking at as far as price wise to get it fixed in a shop?

Also, I was told it may be a bad solenoid? If the problem isnt too big what type of price range am i looking possibly to get a silicon hose job and this boosting problem fixed?

I have an appointment tomorrow in Plesanton at Ricks Rotary Performance, so I'll get the problem diagnosed, but I am just looking for some type of estimate so I can have some type of idea what to expect.

As far as the intercooler piping - it a f*&%^in $185 (and that's with my friend's "mechanic discount" - they charge the public $240) just for the lower intercooler elbow. Mazda must *REALLY* take pride in their engineering to charge that much for a god*&mn rubber elbow.

So adding up the everything - you're looking at ~$300 - if it's only the intercooler. Good luck on your electrical though; that will be all diagnostic labor.

I'm looking into aftermarket solid-pipes for all everything into and out of the stock intercooler...

As for labor - just buy the part. Anyone and I mean anyone could swap out an intercooler pipe. The mechanic has to charge you at least 1/2 an hour labor (probably between 40-50 clams) for overhead.
