boost spikes...when to worry?
Hmmmm, well with the cooler weather and maybe the airbox mod has contributed, but I now occassionally see boost spikes of 13 psi.......should I worry just yet? I wonder what it would be like with a N1 Dual on?
Remember my car has an auto tranny, so the whole boost deal is a little different animal. I seem to spike on the primary turbo only, it is holding around 10 - 11 max running on both......
I put some octane booster in, just for grins. I run 93 octane gas all the time, so this ought to yield maybe 95 - 96 octane, maybe.
I tell ya what though.....this car is so freaking fun to drive....pull up to a stop sign, mash the gas, it instantly smokes the rears and shifts HARD into 2nd and away you go! Well, after that small hesitation where the tranny and engine communicate and say, "Oh, uh....YEAH...GO now!"

i didnt see a bc in ur sig so i imagine you dont have one. umm....i get spikes up to 13psi. the higher the octane of the gas the better it will help fend off that evil bastard called "detonation." from what i've read i dont think theres really much you can do to prevent boost spikes, just hope you have enough fuel flowing when you get those higher psi readings. bottom line get a boost controller and an aftermarket bov and see if that helps. btw.....i am certainly no expert on the fd so dont take this info to the heart.

I dont think a BOV will help ur boost spiking, but I could be wrong. A Pop-off valve should. GReddy and HKS offer them, and basically they are set at a certain level, anything past that...pop... and out goes the excess boost into the atmosphere. It's kind of a wastegate back up.

Will you settle for "spinning"
Seriously, I wonder if I ought to put the 'pill' in that came with the downpipe from Petitt?

I'd bet the pill is just to bring your boost level back down a little bit since putting the pipe on should raise it slightly. I imagine that its not terribly healthy that you're spiking to 13 pounds.
Wouldn't it be sweet if we had enough to torque to just mash the gas and burn out? After I had my engine ported, I had even less bottom end grunt than before - time for a new differential.

A blow off valve relieves pressure that builds up in the intake system when the throttle is closed momentarily, ie during shifting. It does allow for quicker boost response, and provides protection in vaccum. If the boost spike happens when u let go of the gas, and hit the clutch...then sure it helps.
