Mazda filter, and 10/30 havoline or castrol. You are probably asking to get flamed though, so I'll say that there is plenty of info already on here. Just do a search.

Use the OEM oil filter. It has some sort of valve in it that almost all of the after market units do not have. I forget what it does, but you can find other threads to explain it. As for the oil, there is way too much debate on what kind of oil to use. Do some research. Most of us do not want to see that dead horse of a debate done on the forum again. Just make sure that you are changing the oil within the 3,000 mile rule.

I believe he is referring to the bypass valve. Yes, use the Mazda OEM filter. I usually just order about 5 or 6 of them from the Mazda dealer at a time. They usually have them in stock so it's no big deal.

Not to mention they also come with the throw-away crush washer that you need to replace on your drain plug. Also use Mobil1 Synthetic. Yes, I know what the manual says, but from what has been recommended and what I've been reading online, it's acually better than fossil oils.

Anti-Drain back valve

I do think the Mobil1 filter has it too but they are more expensive. Use the stock Mazda, don't settle for less.

Purolator PUR-ONE, Mobil 1, and K&N are also good "premium" filters. I use the bigger ones listed for older rotaries. Fram sucks. Purolator and AC Delco are the best of the cheapies.

My OEM filters have never come with the washers. Maybe I need to talk with the parts manager. I buy these things 10 at a time too (RX-7 and 323 GTX use the same filter, go through these things pretty quick) and he still charges me for that damn washer.

Nothing but PUR-ONE touches my car. I've tried the K&N but its the same thing for more money. It has the anti-drain back valve as well. I'm pretty sure Purolator makes the OEM Mazda filters now anyway.

k&n, spend the extra pennies and be confident your 7, is being treated right. most places like schucks etc. have sales which help ease the $ pinch.

I use the OEM and it works fine. The thing that pisses me off when I buy the filters is that they charge me 4 bucks for the filter and 2.13 for that damn crush ring washer!!!!! Jesus Christ Id make my own!!!!! But Iam lazy so I dont. Also I use Valvoline Vr-1 Racing oil 20/50 but I might soon go to mobile 1 synthetic because of the info that people have been saying lately!

I use the premium purolater filter used on the 626 its slightly taller, I read the pur-one uses too much filter media and might restrict oil flow.I replace my oil and filter every 2k or less so expensive Mazda filters and synthetic oil dont make sense.Plus they dont add any extra engine life on a FD.

Only use Purolator Pure ONE from a second gen. Read this study.

Yea read it, thats why you shouldnt use the pur-one it has too many pleats and might restrict oil flow. The premium purolater was rated just as good and I would rather give up 99% filtering performance, for better oil flow and slightly less filtering performance.

I use an oem mazda oil filter and 4 quarts of Mobil1 15w50 every ~2k miles. I use the thicker weight oil b/c of the hot texas weather for about 9 months out of the year; once it starts getting colder around dec I use Mobil1 10w30. As mentioned already, the Valvoline VR1 racing oil is also good stuff if you want to avoid the synthetic.

Purolator Pure One, the taller one for an MX-6. I posted all the model numbers for this and the fuel filter but since search is down I can't post a link.

The Pure One oil filter does have the valve everyone mentions and costs about $5. The fuel filter was less than $25.

I use the MX-6 Sized filter as well.

Part number PL14620 for the PureOne
I think L14620 for the regular Purolator
and Fuel Filter F54803.

Hence the reason I use the second gen filter which is like twice the size. Plus I can not find the PURE One filter for the FD.
