Auto to Manual Conversion: Start to Finish Document

I just did 2 auto to manual conversions this past month (3 lifetime so far) and finished a document that lists everything that's involved. Doc includes some planning, every step, how to do the wiring using the existing automatic wiring harnesses, a full parts list, and pricing for new parts in 2022. It's a little bit light on pictures, but you can use the text and search the forum for other writeups if "remove the PPF" doesn't mean enough for you, that kind of thing.

I'm hosting it on a Google drive so if I add pictures to it later or fix errors, you'll get the better version of the document from this link. If the link ever breaks just PM me and I'll fix it:

Nice work. Added to the FAQ with the other, older threads on the topic.

Great work!

First of all: tank you!Thats great for everyone who is currently doing or planing a manual swap. Do you know, if the process is diffent on the JDM 99+ FDs, especially because the wiring seems to be diffent to the earlier usdm models. I am planing to do the swap on a 99 JDM FD und would like to create an separate version of your document for the later spec FDs. First a version in german und later a translated one in english.Would you also provide the MSword version for this? The plan is to perform the swap in early 2024.

Here's the document. Slightly different updated version. I don't know about the 99+ because I've only ever looked into the USDM versions up to this point.

Hi, the instructions are great, I did the same a year ago, and I'm solving the idling, I always use the automatic ecu, do you think an ecu manual is needed? what is the difference between them?
Thank you

My problem, everything is new. vacuum is OK

I’ve had to swap the ECU to 5spd version to prevent intermittent stalling when coming to a stop. And one car just beeped all the time until I swapped the ECU. Haven’t seen one idle hunt like that after a swap though.

i tried another ecu from the manual and it did it too, so i think it's not the unit, i also did diagnostics and the unit has no errors.
I just noticed that with the original ecu the oil pressure works, with another manual ecu the oil pressure doesn't work, it shouldn't be related but I don't know

Updated document - Much better wiring instructions

Did a couple more auto to manual conversions and rewrote the wiring section with much easier to follow step by step instructions with pictures. The wiring is tricky and it's a lot easier to do with this version of document.

Also I'm available to do conversion work at my private garage in the Dallas, TX area if you're interested. Can also overhaul your vacuum lines, gaskets, seals, hoses, etc. so your FD can be as reliable as possible. PM me if you're interested.

sorry to bring this up a couple years later but how did you do the wiring from the auto dash to manual Ecu ? I found one forum but it’s from 2003 with no pictures
