ASP IC Install

Well FedEx made a surprise visit this morning (Saturday!) and dropped off my ASP large IC from RX7Store! Looks great, but I see no mounting hardware or instructions. I'll email Jason to ensure I got everything I should have, but am curious if I should be expecting anything else.

It is not at all obvious from first glance how I am to mount the IC to the car or how to mate the IC up to the ducting. Either 1) simply the pressure from the IC piping pressing the IC against the duct is all that is required to firmly install this, or 2) there are mounting brackets missing, or 3) I am expected to fabricate brackets to install this. (I can do that but I didn't expect I would have to...)

So I'm not complaining (yet ) but thought I might hear from others who have installed these - or perhaps from Mr Wyum himself.

(the air pump friendly pipe looks great, by the way!)

There are no mounting brackets, the IC just sits in place. It's snug, and wont move anywhere. The inlet/outlet pipes sort of push the IC against the duct and makes it quite solid.

Thank you moehler, that is exactly what I wanted to hear! That sounds like one piece-o-cake install. I'll be back in 10 after I install it and let you know how it went.

No aftermarket IC installation is ever a "piece-o-cake install."

Actually it is Kento : ). The hardest part of the install is taking the stock parts out : ). Getting the duct to slide past a couple plastic nubs and lining the IC up in the best spot are probably the hardest parts, which are actually really trivial. Oh I guess the battery move could be considered part of it for the large IC's.

Ha! Didn't see this thread until now! I'm right in the middle of installing mine! Just sent $ to Kevin for the airpump pipe. HAAAAAA! wish I had it before I started. By the way, I started at 11:00 this morning, it is now 4:24p.m. and I figure I've got a few more hours left - gota figure out how to get the aircond. thingy mounted without it hitting the hood - think I need to punch a hole in the duct. Good luck, that damn straight intake pipe that came with my kit now looks like hell, but it fits with my airpump on. Also think about where you are going to mount the ats - I've got 1/2 gallon of coolant on the shop floor right now..

Huh? Don't put any holes in the duct. Just unbolt the cylinder and bend it up lightly while installing the duct, there's actually a notch molded into the duct for that. Then bolt it back down. Whatever you do don't go making holes in anything : ). What part is taking so long? It shouldn't take any longer than 2 or 3 hours for a first timer unless you're doing the battery move at the same time. I'll keep checking back for any questions you've got.

The most trouble I had with the install was figuring out what to do with the AST, like rotoober said. It took ~ 1 - 2 hrs, but afterwards I was staring at the AST dangling by the pullies going

What about relocation of the AST? Best place to mount? And how to mount?

I made a little sheetmetal bracket that mounted to the cool side intake pipe hose clamps. Basically it was a very thin piece of stainless shim stock, I bent a piece in a 1/4 of a circle about the same diameter as the outside of the IC pipes and slipped it in between the clamps and the hose. The other side of the bracket I just folded a tab that mounted to the AST. It worked well but now I've decided to put the AST up front near the relay box.

I've seen people mount it to a bracket on the front passenger side of the ASP duct (there's a little room there on the inside of the "curve"). However, I think that it will be lower there, which can't help its operation.

Honestly I didn't know people were even using the AST still. If you don't want to eliminate the AST there's a lot of different ways you could mount it as others have mentioned above but I'd suggest just deleting it to clean the system up.

Yep, I just finished and used turbojeff's idea, piece of 3/4 wide by 4 1/2" flat put a 90 degree bend with one hole for the ast. I'm going to order an ast elimination kit tomorrow. All the hoses are ty-wrapped down, but are uncomfortably close to the pully and belt Looks very cluttered - which means to me prone to failure. Tomorrow I need to figure out what to do the the + battery cable that is waiting to short out on my nice new intercooler; and burn up all the work I just completed BTW, didn't need to cut a hole in the duct, moved the aircon. bubble-viewing thingy down in its holder and mounted it on the next body bolt twards the out side of the car.
So, the question is, what am I disconnecting by plugging the hose on the back of the intake elbow? It's a cold start hose isn't it? Car didn't seem to start any differently, but has a little different idle now?
Tomorrow i'll also try and get my apexi fc installed, than that is enough wrenching for a few weeks

Well, I'm just finding a few minutes here and there to work on it... the new duct went in very nicely and seems to fit very well with a Koyo rad.

I test-fit the new airpump-friendly pipe (IC not in place yet) and am a tad confused. One, it doesn't seem it will be long enough to reach. Two, the recess in the side of the pipe doesn't match up with anything on the airpump. The recess sits an inch behind the airpump intake "elbow", which I had assumed was what the recess was designed to clear. Three, the IC-end opening isn't pointed straight ahead as I'd expect... sigh

Maybe it will all make sense once I get the IC in there... I've probably got the whole pipe cockeyed

It'll all make sense once you put the IC in, although the end might still have a little angle to it depending on where you place the IC relative to the driver and passenger sides. Adjust your airpump all the way down on the tension settings and the notch lines up with a casting protrusion on the airpump.

Mount it in the trash can. With an underhand toss...

I actually did what sounds to be very similar to what jeff did ( at least as far as the stainless piece of metal to support it )

If anyone want's a picture I can certainly take one this evening.

Things are going together nicely...

Thought I'd mention a nice ASP graphic would look real nice on that monster duct. Where's the obligatory sticker?

I'm not one for stickers in general, but in my engine bay it might be nice to give credit where credit is due. Besides, that blue ASP logo might look real nice with my blue silicone hoses.
