Angry Apex Seals Blown! Help!

Hello gang,

I am in a pissy mood tonight. I just found out that my 1993 rx7 needs a new engine. The mazda dealership quoted me as much as 10,000 to replace the turbos (which i dont think need to be replaced yet) and the engine!!! Is there any f#$@%* g way to do it for cheaper or any other suggestions other than buying another car? I understand that these cars cost $$ but, i really do not want to go broke on this car.
ALL IDEAS AND THOUGHTS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
feel free to email me directly at kiddslick8@Hotmail.com.

thanks all.

WTF? $10,000 to replace the turbos and engine? You better go someplace else fast man!! For 10k you could have yourself a new engine, new ported turbos, and a bunch of other cool stuff to make it go faster. Seriously, a new engine with turbos should only cost about half that, a lot depends on how much you get charged to have it installed.

Find a competent rotary mechanic in your town fast. I don't know of anyone in Utah...but maybe some other guys can suggest someting.

You can buy a new remanufactured engine from Rob at Pineapple Racing in Portland, Oregon for $1900....assuming you have a good donor engine (yours isn't totally grenaded). Then, if your turbos are cooked, you can pick up a used set of turbos off www.thepartstrader.com or here in the classifieds for $500. If you can't find any, then you can get yours rebuilt from a vendor like www.turbocity.com, assuming yours aren't totally screwed.

So...you could get your car up and running again for around $2400 + $400 (for gaskets and sensors you break when pulling the engine). That is, if you can pull the engine yourself.

I am not sure how much extra it would cost to get the engine pulled at a shop, then reinstall a new engine...probably at least $1200.

Another great resource would be www.kdrotary.com, however they are very far away from you...they are in PA.

Hope that helps.

Later,
Patrick

first thing never take yor car to a mazda dealer they don't know how to work on them. second thing to do is let's make sure the motor is blown, check the map sensor to make sure the hose is on. the map sensor is located on the back wall of the engine next to the brake booster, it's square with a nipple on the end. third do a compression test your self or find a good shop that can do it. do a search on the forum to tell you how to do it. fourth remember number one. oh can you give us some details on what your car is doing to make you think the engine is blown.

kiddslick,

I was in your position a few years ago, unforunately I didn't know any better and actually paid Mazda the money for the engine and turbos.

If I were you, I would talk to some of the shops like Pettit Racing for a rebuild. You can get a better job done by a shop like them for half the price.

After I got the new engine in from Mazda, they didn't replace anything else so hoses and all sorts of ofther stuff began to go wrong shortly after they finished the install of the engine. A competent shop would have replaced the hoses and other failing parts.

There are other shops that do rebuilds, but some of them require you to remove and send them the engine and then install it back yourself when it's complete. If you have the resources to do that yourself, there are a few shops around for that. If not, talk to Pettit.

Good luck.

zayrx7 - nicely said

Please do yourself a favor: Don't ever take your car to the dealer
if you want to be happy and enjoy your rx7.
Good luck:p
