another 'should I buy' question
I'm looking at a red 94, touring, 5 speed with 65,000 miles. The car is completely stock and the seller is asking $16,900. I know I need to inspect it, but on the surface the car seems to be in great shape. Should I be concerned with the milage? The price seems to be in the ball park. Also, there is a little niggle in the title that shows an odometer problem in 96. The carfax shows a roll back as in for a car that only has 5 digits for milage on the odometer and needed to be reset after 99,999 miles. This occured when the owners had the car checked out for a change in financing. Obviously this is an error and I don't think it is much cause for concern, but it is on the title.
Any thoughts?

65K miles is nothing, I mean its 10 years old thats probably lower milage than 95 pct of the rx7's out there. Although you see red Rx-7's whoring every street corner, 94's are quite rare. If the paint is in great shape I'd consider buying it. You should get a compression check cause engines are expensive.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to try to have a professional inspection done before I buy and I definately want a compression test. Unfortunately the car is 8 hours away, so I'm inspecting most of the car from a distance.

If its the original engine expect to start replacing stuff very soon, including the engine within 20K miles.
I wouldn't pay what he is asking. See if he will take less. I bought mine a year and a half ago for $15,900 with a completely new drivetrain.
If its an auto then that price is way, way high. A 94 VR isn't that rare or spectacular, so it shouldn't require a premium sales price.

Its always good to try and talk down the price, I would try 15K, but again a 94 should be worth more than a comparible 93.

For ref. - i paid $17,000 for a 93 with 60K on the body, 40K on the engine. It had: IC, DP, CB, cold air (all PFS stuff). this was 3 yrs ago or so.
unless you intend to stay stock, why not get a car with at least some mods for around the same money?

Seems high to me too. I bought my 93 touring with 66K miles for 11,000. I was also looking at a 94 Base with 55K miles for 13,900. None of them had any mods. Now that it is said and done I wish I would have bought the Base. I spent almost 2K changing the interior to black and my head hits the roof of the car. Wouldn't have had a problem in the base.

Thanks for listing your car David. Looks like that is a pretty good deal for a 95 with all of those aftermarket parts. Unfortuantely i'm not really interested as I plan to keep the car pretty much stock.

The racing beat dual tip exhaust is one of the quitest exhaust they make for the 7. Gas mileage is aroun 12-14 city and around 20 on the interstate. The car hasnt been tuned since the new engine was installed, however it was tuned on the previous motor by Rotary Performance and the ECU was upgraded and set to 14.5psi. If there are any other questions you need answered just pm me or give me a call. Thanks

You can comparison shop around in the "For Sale" section of this forum. There seems to be a lot of nice cars, like this one:

David's car seems pretty nice and not modded too far from stock. It wouldn't be too daunting to a new RX-7 driver except you could consider changing the midpipe back to a cat or high-flow cat. And if you really want stock you could sell those parts and get the stock replacement for dirt cheap. Definitely worth a look, especially for comparison.
IMO, pay a lot of attention to the body and interior on a 65k car. Some will be great and some will suck, and unless you're getting a crazy steal you will eat your shorts trying to improve that stuff. It will also be nice to compare to the other car.
