airpump failure due to cold temp??
When I started my car today I heard a loud screaching noise followed by a burning smell, rough idle(popping ect) but vacuum was normal. I opened the hood and the noise sounded like it was coming from the airpump. I shut the car off after about a minute. I didn't have to time do further inspection, but will when I get home after dinner.
Based on what I observed and read I think the airpump failed. Prior to this morning I have never had a problem with my airpump (noise ect). The temp at the time of startup was -15 on the PFC. Could the cold temp have anything to do with the failure?
Also I'm running a pretty high water to antifreeze ratio. In general what are the adverse effects of this other than cracking of lines/plastic due to freezing?
Thanks,
-Chris C.

Jesus, can you imagine if one tossed the belt and didn't have the Evans (like me)!!?? China syndrome!
So we add an air pump and belt to the **** we carry in the back seat compartments? But where will I put the oil, coolant, MMO bottles, fire extinguisher, manual, flexible flashlight, paper towels, funnel for MMO... hmm....

thank for the reply and the link. I'm pretty sure the airpump failed, and will confirm later tonight. I'm suprised that it failed on such a cold day. On the other hand I've been running an open intake for the past couple of months. Maybe it was weaked by the over the summer/fall when it was warm and the -15C air finished it off this morning.

YZF thanks for the offer, but a local owner has a spare that I think I'm going to pick up (hopefully for a reasonable multiple of beers). I'm also considering getting rid of the airpump all together and going with a scilencer/midpipe, but don't think I have time to get it tuned or sort out boost creap issues.
