Aftermarket IAC Valve for FD3S

I was unable to find any information on this in my searches, and I am just curious, since the connector for the stock IAC valve is becoming scarce...

Has anyone fitted an aftermarket stepper motor to their FD for controlling idle? Are there any that bolt up in the stock location without modification?

I found this Edelbrock one that has a similar-looking footprint, but I have no idea if it fits.

a stepper motor needs the appropriate ECU controller, and at least 4 wires, if not 7

Sorry. I meant a solenoid. Isn't that what the stock one is?

Yeah stock is just a solenoid. I can't imagine it would be that difficult to get a generic solenoid, plumb it into a hose and run that into your intake somewhere. Most people end up eliminating the IAC, so not likely worth anybody's time to make a direct replacement aftermarket unit.

The FD3S uses a PWM controlled IAC valve. Maybe someone could chime in about possible direct bolt-on aftermarket replacements, but I'm not aware of any.

With some engineering it is possible to use IAC valves from different cars. Older Bosch equipped cars have a two wire valve that has nipples (about 16mm or so) that allow plumbing to a manifold. And if you're creative you can fabricate adapters for others as well.

But, why? The stock ones fit right up, are properly sized, and work really well. I wasn't aware that there was problems sourcing connectors?

That makes sense. I guess there isn't a market for it. Your idea about a generic solenoid sounds reasonable too.

By the way, I like the sub-text beneath your username! I see that you are triple-Wankel equipped.

Thank you for the insightful information. I definitely agree with you about keeping the stock one. The issue arose when I recently ordered a connector package from Ludwig Motorsports and was told that the IAC connector is a proprietary Mazda part and is no longer available. I searched and searched the threads on rx7club and the rest of the internet, but was unable to find a part number or supplier for the connector. My car was not using the IAC valve when I bought it, so I lack even an old connector that could be reused.

I purchased a IAC valve connector and pins a little over a year ago. I believe it was from tripointengineering.com, but I just searched and the website is not working.

Ahhh too bad. Thank you for checking though.

I am currently in communication with Mazda directly. I emailed a plea for help with the connector and got a positive response. They are willing to try to provide more information about it.

What kills me is that I had a brand new engine harness, but I returned it because I am making my own (my car has a Haltech ECU). The plug might have had some identifiers molded into it. I could have at least measured it. Oh well.

Mazda used the same IAC connector from ~89 up until they stopped using IAC valves, so you should be able to find one from something.

Thank you. That makes it a much more abundant part. I feel confident that I will find one eventually.

3rd gen Probes/626s etc. at the local u-pull-it lot might be something to check. And they made a lot less underhood heat than our cars.

Check late 90-early 2000 Ford vehicles, very similar Valve to the Mazda and easier to find 2 wire connector.

Tom93r1...You just cant put any 2 wire solenoid based IAC on and expect it to work properly. The factory unit runs at a specific frequency. If you don't match that frequency or change the settings in the ecu, it will buzz really loud.

all the Mazda valves seem to work on the same frequency, which is nice. its like they had a meeting and standardized that, and hose sizes and such, makes the cars really nice to work on.

For anyone that just can't find a connector, you can pot the valve and add any kind of connector you wish. We offer this service and generally use a Deutsch DTM connector.

There was a guy I ran across on FB that was working on 3D printing some connectors. But, like a lot of these projects, it seems to have stalled out. The OE connector is a Sumitomo piece. It's not in their catalog. The only place you're going to find them now is off another harness.

Thanks, guys. If I can't source one from another forum member, I will try looking at Mazdas and Fords from those years in local junkyards.

Regarding frequency (stock: 244 Hz?), I have a Haltech ECU, so I should be able to customize the PWM output to whatever is needed by a different solenoid. That's plan B if I can't find a connector.

Plan C is to build a zero throttle map.

Plan D is to do nothing. The car idles alright (if a bit high) without the ISC.

Ok, so maybe this is plan C

Mind pointing me towards this. This is something I could likely do very easily.
