ABS Control Unit gone wild!!!....

I took the FD for a short ride last night and when I got back home and turned the car off, I could hear a weird sound coming from the engine bay as if a small fan was on. I knew it wasn't the radiator cooling fan(s) cause they make a different noise. I opened the hood and quickly realized the noise was coming from the ABS Unit. It had never done this before.

After about five minutes, I decided to take the positive cable off the battery. The noise stopped. I kept the cable off for about 5 minutes and then put the cable back on. The noise didn't come back on.

Has this ever happened to any of you?? Is the ABS Control Unit going bonkers on me?? Thanks for your input.

I didn't think about the fluid level being low. I'll check it in a bit. Thanks.

Mine did the exact same thing about 3 weeks ago. I pulled the ABS fuse and it stopped. When I put the ABS fuse back in, it didn't start again. I think it's the relay inside the little black box that runs under the ABS lines thats sticking. But mine hasn't done it again since, and my brakes work fine, and my ABS works.

Take it out. The ABS sucks in these cars anyway. I don't mine a bit, even in the rain.

Hope it works. My ABS warning light was also coming on when this was happening. But like I mentioned, it took care of itself after I disconnected the battery cable and put it back on after about five minutes. Good luck.

i disagree, i went from my fd to my old benz, it was like worlds apart because every time i would hit my brakes to try to stop as hard as my fd, i would lock up my tire. even at slow speeds like at 5mph, it would just smoke my front tires. I like being able to just hit my brakes at 60mph and come to a stop without the tires locking up at all. not having to worry is fun I have yet to test the fd without abs which is one thing i should do. How does one go about disable the abs system anyways? do you simply just have to pull the fuse in the front of the car?

I have had this happen to me a couple of times at autocross events.

Ever notice the little noise when you first start up & drive away (a little brrrup sound)? It's the ABS self test. You need to be moving over 5 mph to trigger it.

In the event you start moving slowly & don't exceed 5 mph quickly, the abs system will think its a fault & contintinuously run with the ABS light on.

You have to drive pretty slow in the pits at some events. If I didn't hear that "Brrup" while in motion I would soon get a light & hear the pump running.

I had to shut the car off & pull the ABS fuse for a couple of minutes.

I never disconnected the battery cable.

Sometimes I have to turn the key on off a couple of times & pull the fuse to clear it .

Either way, it will run forever if you let it.

Moral of the story?
After startup, try & quickly exceed 5 mph either forward or backwards (It self tests in either direction)

Great for freeing up some space, but is the FD a better car without it? I don't think so. The reason the FD was one of the best braking cars of the day was because it had (at the time) an advanced ABS system.
Not to mention it could save your life!

I completely agree that there is something to be said for abs. When you are on the way to work in the rain and need to stop fast as you are on your cell or something there is no replacement I suppose.

My experience with any ABS from early 90's cars is the abs seems to be sluggish, including the seven's. It doesn't seem to pulse fast enough. I brake right until I feel the brake starting to lock, and I then 'float' the pressure right up near that limit. The on and off of the abs not being there I strongly think if you brake correctly you can stop sooner. Simple physics is in line with that.

But yep, no holding your coffee in the morning doing that It just comes down to simple preference, I just don't like abs and it never has helped me. I hardly ever activated it when it was still up and running, including over the winter in the snow, where the abs was worthless anyways. And before its mentioned.... I don't drive like a grandma or something either... Ask *anyone* in the STL seven club..... I don't drive like a grandma by *any* means. Hell I drive like a fool My brakes def. work; I test them very often

Also, read here. I also have strong opinions about the fact that most people don't know *how* to brake. They can modulate the throttle, steer the car and all of that. But with brakes you just stab em'!

While I know that abs is made to managed threshold braking, there is something to be said it isn't always the best at it.
