'94 not running right....

Running way too rich on idle and high rpm...... I have a pettit computer in it that from what I understand only remaps under boost and should still allow the dealer computer to talk to it for diagnostic purposes... can anyone confirm that ? The dealer says they can't..but I don't know that they have actually tried...

If that may be a problem, is there anyone in the bay area that has a stock computer from a '94 5sp that they might be able to loan or rent to me for a week or so ? ( or maybe even sell to me)

I really can't find my stock one....

Any help would be appreciated...

thanks

When you say you are running rich, how do you know?

Reprogrammed ECU's will be more on the rich side, especially if it's programmed for more mods than your car has installed.

As far as the Pettit ECU, I believe it supports all the same diagnostic functions at the stock ECU. If all they are trying to do is pull ECU codes, that will still work the same.

it will actually start to flood itself in stop and go traffic... too much idling... it will start to stumble a little bit, then rev it up and clean it out and it's good for another 5 minutes...

i normally run with powerfc which i know doesn't do the diagnostics... the pettit is borrowed...but yea.... thanks for the 2nd (confirming) opinion on the diagnostic capability of the pettit....

i think the dealer is being lazy..... they just say not factory computer, only adjustment is idle speed.. and don't seem to want to touch it.. i'd really like to still get a factory computer to them, and have them check for ECU codes without picking it up and dropping it off again ... cause I'm sure they will still try to charge me $100 for having looked at it in the first place... even though I told them it was that computer before I dropped it off... and they sounded happy to at least try at that point...

i really think it's some smog or cold start valve or something that is sticking... anyone know if the diagnostic codes would tell them exactly what to check/replace ? or should I go with more of a trial and error approach ?

thanks !

You can check the diagnostic codes yourself without a scan tool. Under the hood, near the battery, there is a plug labeled 'diagnostic port', or something like that. Take a piece of wire or a small paperclip and jump the TEN and GRD terminals. Turn your ignition to the 'on' position, and the codes will flash on the check engine light.

There is much more info on this procedure on this website http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/index.html

doesn't seem to be a code that is 'storeable'

thanks.. i tried that..but......

I have to drive 5 or 10 miles before the check engine light comes on.... then when you turn off the car to do that procedure i think it is getting cleared because I can't get anything out of it that way...

i hear the dealer has a computer that they can take with them on a test drive and when the light comes on, grab it while it's still running.

the adventure continues

That's wierd. Any code should be stored in the computer. Are you sure you're doing it right?

pretty sure i'm doing it right... i'm normally pretty good with that sorta thing... electronics and wires and all.... it's the bigger stuff I don't like so much...

O2.. maybe... the richness comes and goes... too... sorta strange

PFC is mine... borrowed the pettit just for troubleshooting... if only i could find a stock one...

no complaints about the PFC except my AC stopped working right.. but I 'fixed' that with a little switch under the dash to manually turn the compressor on and off... bypassing the PFC. (not though.. i got it from Ray and he set it and I never mess with it... so while no complaints... I can't really comment on useability..etc.... I just know I haven't blown anything up with it.. and running about 11.5 lbs)

thanks for all the help everyone.. any other ideas are welcome... i'll keep workin on it

swpapign a computer wont tell u anything, if your fuel is modified then the stock ecu might even run worse, if the pfc is tuned i dont see why u are havign problems?
did u do the basic maintanace, plugs air filter...?

So it runs bad with the PFC too? Doesn't the PFC allow you to look at all the sensor outputs? That would be a good troubleshooting tool, basically the same thing the dealership would do.
