2002 RX7 Type R Bathurst Model

I am new here on this forum...just now getting into RX-7's. I am in the service, Air Force in particular. I have orders for japan and was wondering what one of these cars is worth over here in the states. I am allowed to bring a car back from Japan being that I can't take one with me. So I plan on buying either a RX-7, GTO, or newer Supra when I go over there. I will have to pay to have it reconditioned for here in the states and all but I just wanted to know if it was worth it or not?

Probably not worth it because either way the car, if it wasnt imported, will have to pass crash tests. So you might want to plan on buying many of them so you can wreck all but one. Also I believe the Supra in Japan had less power than the one in the sates but Im not positive.

Is it not the same car as yall's FD. Just with 280 HP. I have a friend that just came back from japan and he said that all the guys over there are bringing back Skyline GTR's and stuff. So I know it can be done but you have to spend 1500 or so dollars getting it to meet emisions or I can just sign a document saying it is for racing only. That exempts you from all kinds of stuff. But you gotta admit that it would be cool to drive a 2002 RX-7.

Importing cars questions have been asked many times here. Do a search and you'll find lots of stuff to read up on. If importing a 2002 FD would be so easy, wouldn't we all have one instead of a 93-95?
I believe it CAN be done, but take a lot of time and money.

For me the Government will pay for the shipping and stuff all I have to do is arrange for the conversion. That is actually very easy. All I want to know is how much is it worth over here. I can probably get one for about 25K over there. Would it be worth more than that if I brought it over here to the states whenever my tour is done?

yo, props, if you can do it. thats a big if. but if you can, mark me down as the first bid for $53000 if you want to resell it. youve got my email or pm me. it would honestly be the hottest thing on this side of the pond. and dont sell out and get a lame supra, be true to yourself and bring that 2002 rx7 back with the backseats just be even more unique, eh. it is the same as ours by the way, just a hell off alot better, louder, meaner, faster and polluting. good luck.

Sweet so they are worth it then. My friend, the one that just got back from over there, said that it isn't to big of a deal as long as you get to conversion done at one of the Japanese shops, they actually have places over there that do the conversion for you to bring it to any country that you want to ship it to.

Skylines have been crash tested by Motorex:

http://www.motorex.net/faq.html

As for the FD being the same, it's not "exactly" the same, and that's where the US customs comes into play. Unless the car is "exactly" the same, the crash test is invalid.

I've heard, but don't know for a fact, that if you are in the military, you are able to bring a car back with you. However, you cannot resell the car or anything when you get back and it stll does need to pass emissions.

There are several topics of this on the web, just do a search through google.

I've also heard that the car can only be in the states for 2 years, and other restrictions, but I have no idea if those are true or not. I'm sure the Air Force can provide you will all that information if you ask them.

Thanks everyone. Even if I can't bring it back I am defintly gonna get one when I go over there. Hopefully I can work on it a little at a time trying to get it to pass emmisions. No I didn't plan on selling it as soon as I got back. I just didn't want to loose my *** on a car after I just bought it...though that does happen sometimes.

My understanding is that the US Gvt allows each and every citized i free pass.......... that is everyone gets to import one (1) vech ... it doesn't have to pass tests/crash etc... this is the way it was ...um....17 years ago....possibly still true... best of luck checking it out... Carter

Talking I hope you can

My nephew will be going to Japan after basic in the Air Force. He wants to get an RZ while he is there.

The car needs to be 2 years old (black market law) and/or you have to have been living in that country for a certain period of time. You can get a one time exemption, which probably means you can not transfer the title. Smog and saftey have to meet federal standards but no higher. That's all I know for now. Not sure if that applies to an FD as well.

Worse come to worse. You can import it for racing. Buy a used FD and swap peices (engine, ecu, seats, front end, rear hatch, lights, etc.) then sell the left over peices jspec body.

So, what are you going to do, switch the left hand driver side to the right....get an FD over here and mod it, you'll enjoy it more and you'll save tons of money

If you have the CASH... alot of CASH because you wont be able to get anything but a signature loan at first... it can be done. The big boys new are about $39,000 (or $29000 for a RB model ) then shipping to two diffent locations... and then plan on a few suprises... plus a couple bucks for those individuals helping you coordinate it... Alot of people on here can afford a $50-$60K (Not me ) automobile but if my math is correct not ANY more the 2% of you could afford to pay strait CASH. I will help any one that really has the cash order it on this end for peanuts just because it would be interesting to be a part of but I dont see anyone forking over that much CASH strait out of thier pockets...

No one wants to fork over that cash for fear of getting screwed over.
