1st gear "clunk"

Just got a CYM FD, and noticed/felt a funny sound when shifting into 1st gear from neutral at a stop. It's not too prominent or loud, but there's a clunking sound when putting it into gear. Doesn't make the sound if I'm already in another gear then switch to 1st, just from a dead stop into 1st.

This is really the 1st FD that I've driven, and not sure if that's just how the transmission is, or if there may be a problem somewhere.

Couldn't find any info in older posts regarding this specific issue.

Thanks!

Like it's clunking into gear. More from the middle, instead of the rear end.

I think I have that problem too. Is it a deep "thud" kind of sound?

My car also makes a thud when putting into 1st at a stop. Mine does sound like it's coming from the back though. I think my problem is actually the clutch adjustment, when the pedal is all the way to the floor, the clutch is still engaging and slipping a little bit, so when you put it in first, it winds up the drivetrain a little.
The pedal is adjustable, but when I adjusted it, I ended up with not enough travel at the top, so the clutch would never be fully clamped, so it would slip at high loads. Time for a new clutch!
One way to tell if it's touching is to stop, put it in first gear (thud and hard to put in), then put in neutral, and then put in first gear again. If doesn't glide right into gear the second time, your clutch is likely not fully disengaging. Try adjusting the clutch pedal a little and see if it goes away.

If the car is not moving, and you get a clunking noise when putting the car into first gear, I would check your differential mounts. You can replace with either stock, Mazdspeed (40% stronger but still rubber), Unobtanium (contact Jim Labreck for current group buy), or one of the Japanese Tuners (i.e. R.E. Amemiya, F.E.E.D., etc.).

Depending on where its coming from it sounds like your mounts or your rear suspension bushings.

I get the same type of knock when I back out at an angle. I believe the suspension bushings come out to about $300-$400 total for parts.
