13B or 20B?
Ok, im thinking of what kind of engine I would like to buy whenver I decide to build my car up in the future. I always loved the idea of the 20B engine, but it seems quite rare and expensive. I like it caue I love the way it sounds =) and also I LOVE the big increase in torque it has, its just amazing.
I also thought maby it would be better ($ wise) to buy a rebuilt 13B engine and fully build the engine and street port it, ceramic apex seals, the whole 9 yards. Although a 13B wont make as much torque as a 20B and wont sound as nice ( although I still like the sound of my 13B =)
My engine now is fine, im just thinking far in the futrue when I got more money and a better job to modify lol
so.... what do you guys think?

20b is a good project, but very expsensive... and I mean very! I've read that it takes people 15-20k just to build them, excluding running them... and they are very hard to maintain etc... I say 13b... what are you using it for?

well I plan on using it, for strictly road racing. Im surprisingly not really into drag racing, im more into endurance. Like race it around a track for some laps. I thought about getting an RX8 engine, but I dont think they even have and serious mods for it yet?
if you are thinking about autocross I would stick with the 13b with moderate boost levels for long term reliability just because I don't think the power will be your limiting factor for track times. I would devote your money towards wheels/tires, suspension, and brakes.

I had the same question. I went to the shop I picked to do my engine rebuild and they had a 20b out of its crate, sitting there. 20b's are really big. They convinced me to stay with a well tuned 13b. Cramming that thing into the engine bay, shoving the tranny around, and having it work reliably ( I want a trackable car) didn't seem like it would be worth it. I also wonder how handling is affected with extra weight in front.

Would removing the turbos and plumbing offset the weight of the 20b? Going NA would seem to simplify matters.

I may have to revisit this idea. Having owned an '87 TII and currently an '03 WRX, I long for a wide powerband.

Now that the defined Autoworks 20B drop in kit is available, do you think it would really be in the 15-20K price range.
the product looks pretty good, but then again, I'm still learning.
What are your thoughts on this addition to the 20B conversion world?

I have the Defined Autoworks subframe kit installed in my car. The fact that Logan made an awesome subframe alternative for the 20B doesn't mean that the costs for the entire project as a whole really come down. His kit is actually more expensive than the subframe conversions available i.e. Pettit, etc. The biggest advantage of the kit is no steering rack modifications and thus no bump-steer issues.
The MOST expensive parts about the conversion are the little things people neglect to think about. Depending on the route you take, a lot of "custom" modifications need to be done. Custom modifications = BIG money!
All that said, the 20b NA route for FD owners is the way to go imho. It costs as much to go single turbo and there you end up with a much more fragile perfromance upgrade. The NA 20b can make 350-375 max rwhp, but has way more torque than any 13bTT and it sounds way better.

I figure somewhere down the line I'll be going this route as well. I just love turbo rotary's so I'm having a difficult time deciding when that will be...
Keep us updated on your FD's progress Gordon. I haven't really heard much about your project aside from what I've just read above. G/L with the FD...I'm expecting yours to be one of the nicest ones

Another question for NA 20b installations:
How much heat does it generate? The nearby track for me is in the high desert and is very hot in the summer. I've heard that Corvettes and BMW 335's are overheating. Would a NA 20b run cooler than a 13b? Heat management seems to be the Achilles heel of FD performance mods.
Thanks,
Dave...
