******Car fire prevention******

In light of all the recent car fires that I've been reading about. I started wondering where the problem areas or weaknesses in the rx-7 so that I may be able to prevent a Car-B-Que.
So if anyone has any tips or suggestions on what parts needed to be attended to or replaced please inform us. My car is off the road now getting ported and rebuilt but I'd hate to lose it to car fire. Especially considering I've alrady been through shot to turbos, bad coolant seals, and severe hail damage.

Lets see it..bring on the advice.

300.00 is better than having to douse your baby while you roast some smores....

make sure that all the coolant lines and oil lines and fuel lines are properly inspected and have the proper fittings and are up to the task....

Replace the FPD, injector o-rings and insulators, and put new stock fuel hoses on. That should do it.

Yeah be careful when you upgrade stuff in the fuel system.

My FD never leaked a drop of gas until I put in an aftermarket fuel pressure reg. One of the fittings was leaking gas just two days ago. Luckily I inspect under my hood almost every time before and after I drive it, so I knew this was an issue right away.

I think that it might not be a terrible idea to do away with the stock FPR and maybe the pulsation damper too.... and then replace them with compression fittings and stainless braided hose. Then make your connections back to the stock metal fuel lines back by the brake master where they come in. If any gas leaks here (not a fountain of gas, a LEAK), it won't really hit anything hot or pool anywhere. This is where my FPR is, and when it leaked, it just dripped harmlessly on the ground.

it cost a good amount go SS braided fuel line from tank to engine, you need a sump, external fuel pump, fuel filter, all the lines and fittings, etc. i know since my car has all this

another thing to check is the engine wiring harness. I know it's $$$ but it does wear out in time and a lot of people have engine problems just because of a short in the harness. Thus if you get shorts/sparks, it could start a fire there too. Basically check for leaks of any kind, coolant, oil, and gas. And carry at least a 5lb fire ext.

Preventative maintenance

Yes, as P'Cola said "fuel injector O-Rings", then there is leaking lines that should have been replaced with the recall and the 3rd thing is leaking oil most likely from a turbo and more commonly the 2nd turbo.

!!! Get A fire extinguisher.........NOW Just yesterday we had a car pass us on our "fun run" and burst into a huge cloud of smoke. We pulled over right away to se smoke billowing out of the hood. Lifting the hood revieled that something had brokes just above the turbo/downpipe area and was smoking badly I looked down into the area to see if I could tell what had broken and got a face full of FLAME!! Thankfully it just popped up and died as fast as it had started and we didn't have a toasted car. Not one of us idiots had taken a fire extinguisher and could have done nothing to stop the car from burning. There are a lot of cooland and oil lines right around the hottest area so change fuel/oil/coolant lines regularly and have fire protection on hand.

Just get a normal fully working fire extinguisher, not anodized blue, or chrome plated.
But juts an everday extinguisher.

And check to see that it's good every once in a while.
I remember the thread where AnthonyNYC's car burned that he had a fire extinguihser, but it wasn't working.

get an exstinguisher, but just dont mount it on your a pillar or something stupid like that. Just stick it in your hatch...if someone says thats rice, just punch them in the mouth, set there pants on fire and then use the exstinguisher on them while saying "im saving your life!"

Thats Great! Now on a more serious note, a lot of exstinguishers don't work after the first spray. I guess they don't expect you to have multiple fire emergencies. If you are that concerned about it not woking pay the money and get 2, different companies and all. I don't see how you could go wrong there.....

my FD suffered a car fire yesterday..while on my way to get new fuel lines installed and silicone hoses. i was driving down the highway at 65 slowed down to about 25 due to traffic and noticed my hood was smoking... went to pull over..as i was in the nearest lane to the shoulder my engine cut and my car rolled onto the shoulder..i poped the hood got my fire extinguisher and got at the fire...but my fire extinguisher did not help..i called the fire department and it was too late by the time they got there..my front clip was burned beyond repair when they were finally able to put it out. insurance totaled it..now im left with only my commuter..a 85 maxima..rest in pieces 93 MB Touring..
